Elwyn Mancel Grimes was born on May 28, 1943 in Woodville, Mississippi to Professor Ephriam and Ruby Dillon Grimes. His commitment to academic excellence was evident throughout his life. Elwyn graduated third in his class at Meharry Medical College in 1968. He subsequently pursued a career in Obstetrics and Gynecology. Dr. Grimes was a pioneer in the field of reproductive endocrinology, completing a fellowship in this sub-specialty at the Peter Bent Brigham Hospital and Harvard School of Medicine in 1975. He authored multiple scientific publications and chaired the Departments of Obstetrics and Gynecology at several academic institutions. Dr. Grimes served as Vice Chairman of the department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University Missouri at Kansas City and developed the division of Reproductive endocrinology. He served at other academic institutions including Meharry Medical College of Nashville, Tennessee, and John H. Stroger, Jr. Hospital of Cook County, Illinois. In 2007, Dr. Grimes was appointed Chair of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at John Peter Smith Hospital of Fort Worth, and he was Professor of OB/ GYN and Reproductive Endocrinology at the University of North Texas Health Science Center. He held this position until January of 2012. Dr. Grimes trained many young physicians in Obstetrics and Gynecology throughout his illustrious career. He taught at the university level and continued to conduct original research in his field. He served on many university committees, corporate and community-based boards, always seeking to improve the health care of the larger community. He was widely recognized as a leader in his specialty. Dr. Grimes was also an amazing poet and author of a soon-to-be-published science fiction novel.
Those left to cherish fond memories from love and laughter that Dr. Grimes provided are his loving wife; Collette Grimes, children; Elwyn Grimes II (Heather), Elyce Grimes, brother; Dr. Wendell E. Grimes (Cynthia) of Oklahoma City, sister; Dr. Pearl E. Grimes of Los Angeles California, special niece; Ruby Ashley Grimes-Minus, host of nephews and a host of other relatives and friends.
