David was born June 11th, 1959 in Lawrence, Kansas, the son of Stanton and Artis Ball. He earned his Bachelor and Master of Science degrees in Geology as a fourth-generation graduate from the University of Kansas.
He was passionate about his work as a geologist, which was infectious to everyone around him. He joined Champlin Petroleum (Union Pacific) in 1984 where he worked for six years before establishing Ball Exploration, Inc. in partnership with his father in 1990. Since 2008, he has enjoyed working for Burnett Oil Company, Inc. He was a longtime member of the American Association of Petroleum Geologists.
He was a life-long sports enthusiast, but nothing compared to his love and enjoyment for KU basketball.
His heart and life ultimately belonged to his family. He married Susan Storms on April 14th, 1984 in Leavenworth, Kansas. They were blessed with five children. He poured his time and energy into the lives of those he loved. He was the most devoted son, brother, husband, father, and Papa that anyone could ask for. He was an active member of many Lutheran congregations, most recently Calvary Lutheran. He lived a life of faith and firmly followed and trusted Jesus in all things. He was the strongest yet most humble, self-sacrificing man who generously gave everything he could. He always lived with laughter and an unforgettable sense of humor. His smile and joy touched everyone he met.
David is survived by his loving wife of 30 years, Sue Ball; children: Kristen Ochocki and husband Bryan along with granddaughter Abigail, Stacy Daniel and husband Mark, Bekah Ball, Brady Ball and wife Allison, and Bryan Ball; mom, Artis Ball; sister, Becky Ball of Indianapolis, Ind. and many other extended family members.
