Reflections of Life
Brenda Joyce Chalk Gordon was the fourth of five children born to Leroy Chalk, Sr., and Flossie Mae Hayes Chalk on September 27, 1952, in Hawkins, Texas. She united with Brown's Chapel C.M.E. Church at an early age and served in the church choir and was a member of the Brown's Singers Gospel Choir. Brenda was a celebrated member of the Big Sandy High School - Class of 1970, most notably as a National Honor Society member, the first African-American High School Band Majorette, and a 12-year Perfect Attendance record. She began her college education in Tyler, Texas, and received her Associate degree from Tyler Junior College. Brenda was a member of the Tyler Junior College Apache Bells.
In 1972, Brenda enrolled in North Texas State University and was initiated into Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated, Zeta Eta Chapter- Fall 1972. She earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Education and a Master of Science in Education Administration from North Texas State University (now the University of North Texas). While attending North Texas, Brenda met Gary Alan Gordon. They wed on December 4, 1976. Their union. was blessed with one daughter.
Brenda was a devoted, dedicated, and beloved teacher and retired after 45 years. She taught 43 years at Foster Elementary School, in Arlington, Texas structuring the educational development of generations of students. Brenda was the Lead Teacher for Kindergarten and Pre-K, a PTA. Life Member, and Recognized Teacher of the Year.
Brenda was an active member of Providence Baptist Church where she served in the choir and as the church secretary. As a 35-year breast cancer survivor, Brenda was active with the Susan G. Komen Foundation and Race for the Cure. Brenda was a SO-year member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.
Brenda was called to her heavenly home in the early morning of November 9, 2022. She was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, Tommy Chalk, Sr. Her sister, Evelyn Chalk, passed away two days later.
She leaves to cherish fond memories: her husband of 45 years, Gary Alan Gordon; daughter, Genesis Alana Joycelyn Gordon; sisters, Margie Stokes (James) and Barbara Draper (Michael); brothers, Leroy Chalk, Jr. and Dwayne Chalk; a cousin, Delores Hayes Melton (who is more· like a sister); nieces, Colandra Chalk, Ronika Robinson, Robyn Okra, Alexandra Chalk, Sheryel Hill, and Debbie Crooms, and Meredith Lavallais (Tristan); nephews, Reginald Robinson (Adrin) and Tommy Chalk, Jr. (Lashawnda) and Charles Melton,II; great-nieces, great-nephews, cousins, and a host of relatives and friends.
