Barbara Jean Smith

Barbara was born April 6, 1929, in Fort Worth, Texas, to John Henry Harvison, Sr., and Rachel Rosamond Cayce Harvison. She graduated from Paschal High School in 1947 and went on to graduate from Texas Christian University with a Bachelor’s degree in Education and a minor in Home Economics. She married Theron Lavon Smith on June 22, 1952, a marriage that lasted 61 years until Theron’s death in 2014. After teaching school for several years, Barbara chose to become a full-time homemaker to care for their three children and be active in all their activities. After Barbara’s mother was widowed at an early age, she moved in with Barbara and family and lived with them until her death in 1990.

Barbara was highly creative, always having a multitude of art, craft, sewing, and quilting projects going on at the same time. She enjoyed refinishing furniture and would go shopping for antiques with anyone who would go with her. She enjoyed reading novels and tearing out articles for others to read! Family was especially important to Barbara – through the years she would host family gatherings, wanting to make sure everyone kept in touch. She was genuinely interested in what was going on in her children’s, grandchildren’s, and in the last five years, her great-grandchildren’s lives. Her grandchildren and great-grandchildren adored their “Granna.” Barbara had a generous spirit and loved giving gifts and a helping hand wherever needed. The family is incredibly grateful for Barbara’s caregivers through the years who became like family to her.

Barbara was preceded in death by her husband, Theron, and by her parents.
