William “Bill” Francis Eckert, 94, went to be with our heavenly Father on November 13, 2020. Born April 13, 1926 in Huntington, Ind., Bill graduated from Huntington Catholic High School where he played guard on the basketball team. He was drafted at age 18 into World War II as a Communications Maintainer for his US Army squadron. When the war ended, he played basketball on a military team until he was able to come home. Upon returning he met and married Helen Reinig in 1954. After settling in Fort Wayne, he worked for Fidelity of New York Insurance as a claims adjuster for 6 years, International Harvester for 10 years as a test engineer, a semi driver for Food Marketing for 10 years and, after retiring, was a courtesy driver for Hires Auto Parts for 8 years. He loved his bowling and golf leagues along with rebuilding and repairing his, or anyone’s, car. His favorite activity was going to “the office” (Dunkin’ Donuts) every morning to have coffee and a donut with his buddies, where they solved the world’s problems. He attended St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church.
Bill was preceded in death by his parents, Herman Sr. and Hazel (Eltzroth) Eckert; his brothers, Herman Jr “Bud” and Robert Eckert; his sisters, Imogene Gressley, Charlotte Scheiber and Barbara Johnson. His children and grandchildren are Charlene (Bob) Schrader, son Evan Maher; Daniel L. Eckert (deceased); William “Bill” J. Eckert, children Chad and Sara Eckert; Martin (Janel) Eckert, son Daniel Eckert; Julie (Phil) Velez, sons Logan, Wesley and Tyler Wright; Andrew (Michele) Eckert, children Morgan and Travis Eckert. “Dad was always there for his family and was truly loved. We will miss him dearly.”
Per Bill’s wishes, there will be no services.
