Very sad to hear of Bill’s passing.  We shared so many good times at Fairfield, South Side, and during semester breaks from college. He had a great sense of humor, loved to play and watch sports, was kind hearted, and relentlessly positive. You could not ask for a better friend than Bill.

Dr. and Mrs. Ashman and family, I am so sorry for your loss. Please take comfort in knowing Bill had such a positive impact on so many people.  He will truly be missed. 

I first met Bill when working for Tandy Computers in the late 80’s. I found him to be a humble man of great intellect, character, and heart.

Bill was both philosophical and filled with joy. One of Bill’s recent communications was a text at the beginning of the spring where he shared the poem “A Shropshire Lad 2: Loveliest of trees, the cherry now by A. E. Housman”…an appreciation of life and its beauty. He followed up that text with a light-hearted Easter cartoon featuring chocolate bunny rabbits.

In recent years, Bill clearly communicated his priorities and heart with one word - “family”.

Bill was a loyal lifelong friend to his fraternity brothers and numerous colleagues.

I will miss hearing Bill’s distinctly deep voice and chuckle.


I am so sorry to hear of his passing. Bill was one of many students who made my teaching career at Fairfield Jr. High very enjoyable. I will always remember the time that Bill invited Mr. Trammel and me to meet him at Crooked Lake to do some ice fishing. The perch runs were quite exhilarating . I will always cherish student moments like this from those days.

Bill was my "PB" at Wabash.  We stood next to each other "in a line" for almost a year.  Forty-one years ago this week, we also stood together in another line  when he was a groomsman in our wedding.  It was a hot day, but he wore that classic, black tuxedo well.  A highlight at the reception was when Bill led the PB's in serenading my wife, Mary, whom they had known from being with me at Wabash.   At the reception, he also recited poetry and shared his signature muscle poses, all while wearing his black tux.  He was a friend to so many, always caring and willing to listen and offer an uplifting thought.   Even in recent weeks, he was upbeat and positive and concerned about others.   Bill, until we stand in line again someday, may this find you enjoying a home game with the Yankees, with John at your side.  

Deeply saddened of loss of Bill.  He was so instrumental in my life.  He was in my wedding.  We lost track of each other only to reconnect as I was moving from Indianapolis and he was moving back to Indiana.  You will be so missed.  Such good times I cherish with you.  God bless and honored to know such a great person. 

It’s my pleasure to say that I’ve known Bill since the age of 18 as a pledge brother at Wabash.  He has always been one of those unique guys to whom you could talk to about any topic, any time of day or night, and feel much better afterwards.  Bill’s fondness for pranks and poetry make a beautiful combination.   I am using the present tense here since these and many of Bill’s other wonderful qualities are alive and well in the minds and hearts of all of us who knew and loved him.  

Bill was a good friend in high school.  We were often together during baseball or basketball practices.  His dad was one of my pediatricians when I was little.  I have very fond memories of both Bill and Dr. Ashman.  Very sorry to hear of his passing. 

What a wonderful friend and an excellent person.  I will miss him. Think that I will go catch a fish in his memory today... maybe more than one!
