Rodney L. Smith

Rodney “Rod” Smith, 72, of Fort Wayne, a dear friend to all of those that loved him passed away on Monday, September 4, 2023 from extended illness, surrounded by his close family. Born on August 16, 1951 to the late Harvey and Wanda Smith in Adams County Indiana. Rod lived an adventurous life in his younger years with a passion for cave diving and always had the best stories to tell. His early occupations included working for the family business, Smith Trailer Sales, owner and operator of Pleasant Grove Campground, and finally finishing his lifelong career of almost 30 years as an executive financial planner. The one thing you could always count on was that Rod would be there for you when you needed a helping hand with anything or just to share a good laugh. He will be missed dearly, but his legacy will continue in all the lives that he has touched. Rod, the most loving brother, devoted husband and father and cherished uncle is survived by his wife, Lori “L J” Smith; son, Joe Horacek; sisters, Arvella Ripley and Janet Omspach; brother, Roger Smith; sister-in-law, Cathy Groves; many nieces and nephews; and beloved dog, Ozzie. Rod was also preceded in passing by his brother, Ronald Smith. A funeral service will be held at 11:00 am on Monday, September 11, 2023 at Klaehn, Fahl & Melton Funeral home 6424 Winchester Road Fort Wayne, Indiana 46819 with visitation one hour prior. Visitation will also be held from 2:00-4:00pm & 5:00-7:00pm on Sunday, September 10, 2023. Burial to follow the service at Lindenwood Cemetery.
