Robert W. Smith Jr.

Robert W. Smith, Jr., 89, of Fort Wayne died on Sunday, January 4, 2015 at his home. He was born in Fort Wayne, the son of Ina Grace (Schmalzried) and Robert W. Smith, Sr. He married Dolores ("Doie") Moyer on July 18, 1950. She survives. Bob was a graduate of Fort Wayne South Side High School. A World War II veteran, Bob served with the 334th Infantry, 84th Division (the Rail Splitters) and achieved the rank of Staff Sergeant by the age of 19. He was wounded in action in Baal, Germany and received the Purple Heart and was awarded the Bronze Star. Bob retired in 1990 from Dilgard Foods Co., where he had worked for 30 years as Vice President and General Manager. He was a member of First Christian Church in Fort Wayne. In addition to his wife, he is survived by his daughter Gayle L. Skolnik (Bradley) of Indianapolis, and his sons Robert W. Smith III (Susan) of Libertyville, IL and Thomas C. Smith (Sara Slaughter) of Chicago, IL. He is also survived by his six grandchildren Adam and Matthew Skolnik, Robert W. Smith IV and Nicole Smith, and Ben and Samuel Smith. He was preceded in death by his sisters Mary King and Dorothy Shouse. Service is at 7:00 p.m. Wednesday, January 7, 2015 at First Christian Church, with visitation beginning at 5:00 p.m. also at First Christian Church, located at 4800 South Calhoun Street in Fort Wayne. Preferred memorials to First Christian Church and Riley Hospital for Children. Arrangements by Klaehn, Fahl & Melton Funeral Home.
