Mary was born in Warsaw, Indiana on July 1, 1918, to Robert Pletcher and Leona Carteaux. She married Joseph L. Fisher in 1940, and the couple made their home near Packerton, Indiana, where Mary raised their four daughters. The family later moved to South Whitley.
Mary attended Forest Park United Methodist Church, where she volunteered at the food pantry and knitted prayer shawls for those in need.
Her caring demeanor was evident not only through her volunteer work, but also by her intense interest and devotion to the people she loved. She kept up with her dozens of grandchildren - and even their friends, and welcomed those outside the family to call her grandma.
Mary had a fun-loving and adventurous spirit. She was well traveled, having visited British Vancouver, many of the U.S. states, and her favorite destination, Hawaii. She displayed no fear while riding roller coasters with her grandchildren well into her seventies.
Mary was an expert seamstress who learned to sew in order to make clothes for her daughters. She enjoyed knitting, crocheting and quilting, and gave knitted blankets and beautiful quilts to her family as gifts for graduations, weddings and births.
She also enjoyed listening to Cubs games on her radio, reading, solving crossword puzzles and playing games.
Her family will remember her for the tickles she inflicted upon unsuspecting loved ones, her jello desserts, her love of flowers - especially the African Violets she grew at her home, and her sharp remarks that remain family jokes.
Mary is preceded in death by her parents, husband, and daughter, Barbara Uhrick. She is survived by her daughters, Sandra (Theron) Rumsey of Asheville, North Carolina; Betty (Dennis) Henry of Grabill, Indiana; Peggy Sue (Marcell) Codispoti of North Canton, Ohio; and eight grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and 13 great-great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her sister, Roberta (Robert) Frost of Ft. Wayne and sister-in-law, Kate Fisher of Rochester, Indiana.
Visitation for family and friends will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, March 1, at C.M. Sloan and Sons Funeral Home, 1327 N. Wells Street, Fort Wayne. Funeral services will follow at 1 p.m. Mary will be interred at the Ulrey Cemetery in Silver Lake.
In lieu of flowers, please send donations in Mary's name to Forest Park United Methodist Church, the American Cancer Society or the American Red Cross.
