Joshua R. Gerow, Professor Emeritus, Purdue University, died December 4, 2015 in Fort Wayne, IN. He was born in Liberty, NY. He is survived by his wife: Nancy (Scrogham) Gerow; his brother: Richard (Rose) Gerow, of Warner Robins, GA; daughter: Leslie Essary, of Halls, TN; grandchildren: Elijah, Emma, and Jacob Essary, and Andrew Gerow; god-daughter: Jaymi Moody, of Eighty Four, PA; and close childhood friends: Tom (Donna) Oliva, of Yakima, WA, and John (Evelyn) Golembe of Pittsburgh, PA.
He received his B.A. degree in psychology from the University of Buffalo in 1963, and his PhD in experimental psychology from the University of Tennessee in 1967. After teaching for two years at the University of Colorado at Denver, Dr. Gerow joined the faculty of Indiana University-Purdue University at Fort Wayne (IPFW) in 1969. He retired in 2001, but returned to teaching there in 2007.
Dr.Gerow was a prolific author of texbooks. He published articles on psycholinguistics and on the teaching of psychology, and gave numerous talks and invited addresses throughout the country on the latter topic. He loved to teach.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Joshua R. Gerow Jr. and Evelyn (Travis) Gerow; and son, Josh R. Gerow IV.
Visitation will be Tuesday, December 8, 2015 from 12-2pm and 4-6pm at Klaehn, Fahl & Melton Funeral Home, 420 W. Wayne St. Fort Wayne, IN 46802. Memorial service will be Wednesday, December 9, 2015 at 11am at First Presbyterian Church, 300 W. Wayne St. Fort Wayne, IN 46802 with calling 1 hour prior. The service will be officiated by the Rev. Jeff Lehn. Interment will be in Concordia Cemetery Gardens.
