Joseph Sopik, age 88, of Fort Wayne, passed away at his home peacefully surrounded by his family on Wednesday, August 17, 2022. He was born in Banov, Czechoslovakia on July 5, 1934, to the late Stanislav and Angela (Piska) Sopik, being the youngest of four of their children. He served in the Czech military and earned a college degree while living in his native country. In 1972 Joseph defected from Czechoslovakia and immigrated to the United States with his wife and son. He worked for General Motors (LaGrange, IL, Janesville, WI, & Fort Wayne, IN), retiring in 2002 with nearly 25 years of service as hourly employee and a member of the UAW Local 2209. He was also a member of The Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception. In his free time, Joseph enjoyed fixing things around the house and being with his beloved Cocker Spaniel, Hasie. Above anything else, he loved his family and enjoyed being a grandfather to his five grandchildren. Joseph is survived by his wife of 65 years, Vera (Kropacek) Sopik; children, Bretislav (Maria) Sopik, Marketa (Troy) Campbell, and Vera (Douglas) Moreau; and grandchildren, Joseph P. Sopik, Lucas Sopik, Abigail Campbell, Samuel Campbell, and Ava Moreau. He was preceded in death by his parents, sister, and two brothers all in Czechoslovakia. A Mass of Christian Burial for Joseph will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, August 25, 2022, at The Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, 1105 Calhoun Street, Fort Wayne, IN 46802 with visitation one hour prior. Visitation will also be held from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. and from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, August 24, 2022, at Greenlawn Funeral Home, 6750 Covington Road, Fort Wayne, IN 46804. Joseph will be laid to rest at Greenlawn Memorial Park, Fort Wayne following the funeral service. Memorials in Joseph’s name may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association.
