Evelyn J. Moore, 66, of Fort Wayne, passed away on Thursday, March 16, 2023. Evelyn was born on April 5, 1956, in Glasgow, Scotland and later moved to Dunoon where she worked at Dunclutha Children’s Home. There she was a house mother to children between 1-5 years old. It was during this time that she met Michael, a US Navy sailor. They met in April of 1977, and married June 17, 1978. In 1981, the Navy relocated Michael, and their young family, back to the United States. In her 21 years as a Navy wife, they were stationed in many states across the nation including South Carolina, Connecticut, and finally San Diego, CA. While raising her children, Evelyn worked as an aide in their schools. This allowed her to watch over her children, which was fitting of her protective nature. In San Diego, with the children growing older and occupying themselves with school, extracurricular activities, and jobs of their own, Evelyn went to work at Montgomery Wards. There she she worked her way up to a management position. After living in San Diego for 10 years, Evelyn and Michael moved to Fort Wayne in June 2006. This move allowed a more relaxed lifestyle while Evelyn recovered from a November 2005 lung transplant surgery. Evelyn was originally told to expect her new lung to last 8-10 years, optimistically. What the doctors failed to take into account, was Evelyn’s strength, and determination to be with her family. For the next 18 years she fought hard to hold on to her health. The final three years, she battled fiercely to overcome numerous health setbacks. In the end, she had proven the doctors wrong on several occasions, and far exceeded their expectations. Evelyn was loved by many in part due to her big heart, protective nature, and her quirky, goofy personality. Those that were close to her know that when Evelyn was in her comfort zone, she’d often break out in song and silly dances; she loved nothing more than to see her loved ones laughing. Her first passion was undoubtedly her family, but she also had a passion for animals of all kinds, and crafts such as cross-stitching. Evelyn will be forever remembered for her love of life, devotion to her family, her strength, superstitions, her colorful vocabulary, and we know she will be watching over those that she loved. She is survived by her husband Michael J. Moore; children, James (Jen), Carmen (Manuel), William (Rachel), ten beautiful grandchildren aged 4 to 20 years old, and her sister Marie. A Celebration of Evelyn’s Life will be held at 6:00 pm, at D.O. McComb and Sons Lakeside Park Funeral Home, 1140 Lake Ave, Fort Wayne, with calling from 2:00 pm, until time of service. Memorial donations may be given to IU Health Methodist Hospital Transplant Unit, 1702 N Senate Blvd, Indianapolis, Indiana 46202.
