Obituary of Dorothy Marie (Johnson) Azevedo Anderson
Dorothy Marie (Johnson) Azevedo Anderson, 97, of Fort Wayne, Indiana, passed away peacefully at Coventry Meadows on Friday, December 9, 2022. Dorothy was born in Fort Wayne to John and Vernota (Stove) Johnson. She graduated from South Side High School and from Purdue University with a degree in Home Economics. While at Purdue, she met Gastao Azevedo, a member of the Inter American Pilot Training Program. They married and moved to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil where she lived until his death in 1955. She returned to the US and earned a degree in Elementary Education from Ball State University. In 1957 she married Charles L. Anderson. She went back to school to earn a Master’s Degree in Elementary Education from St. Francis College. Dorothy taught at St. John the Baptist School, Justin Study Elementary, and Shambaugh Elementary. She was a lifelong member of Phi Mu Fraternity, past president of the Fort Wayne chapter of the Purdue Women’s Club, and a member of the Indiana Retired Teachers’ Association. Dorothy was a member of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church. She loved spending time with her children and grandchildren and her many pets that she had throughout her life, including dogs, cats, and a macaw that lived with her in Brazil. Dorothy is survived by her daughter, Susan Azevedo (Rick) Longsworth of Fort Wayne; step-son Donald (Tina) Anderson of Fairfax, VA; step-daughters Anita (Marlin) Rhodebeck and Mary Norris of Fort Wayne; grandchildren John Longsworth of Windsor, CT; Jim Longsworth of Fort Wayne; Dr. Jennifer (Adam) Stresemann of Churubusco; Jeff (Emily) Longsworth of Columbia City; Dr. Lauren (Ryan Keating) Azevedo of East Lansing; Lindsay Azevedo of Grand Rapids; step-grandchildren Adam (Legna) Boester and Holly (Paras) Shah of Houston; Patrick and Barbara Anderson of Fairfax, VA; Ashley (Derrick) Sloboda of Fort Wayne; Carolyn Rhodebeck of New York; Anna Norris of Cleveland; and great-grandchildren Evan, Claire, Jacob, Elizabeth, Mia, Riya, Anabella, Luciana, Norah, Laila, Ethan, and Avery. She was preceded in death by her parents, both husbands, fiancé, Jim Dickson, sons Ronald Azevedo and Dr. John Azevedo, step-daughter and her husband, Linda and Rick Boester. Dorothy’s family would like to extend a special thank you to all of the amazing staff at Coventry Meadows for their kindness and loving care of her during her stay there. A Mass of Christian Burial to honor Dorothy's life and legacy will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Friday, December 16, 2022, at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church, 10700 Aboite Center Road, Fort Wayne, with visitation one hour prior. Immediately following the service, she will be laid to rest at Willshire Cemetery, Willshire, Ohio. A visitation will also take place on Thursday, December 15, 2022, from 5:00 P.M. to 7:00 P.M., at D.O. McComb & Sons Covington Knolls Funeral Home, 8325 Covington Road, Fort Wayne.
