South Portland-Donald Carl Ward passed away peacefully at home on March 29 with his family by his side.Don was born on January 9, 1926, in Portland, Maine, the son of Clarence and Eleanor (Dickinson) Ward.
He is a 1943 graduate of South Portland High School and worked as an engineer for the Maine Central Railroad retiring in 1986.
In his younger years Don enjoyed hunting, fishing and motorcycles, but he will be best remembered for his fine woodworking skills having made among many things cherry furniture that rivals today’s well known furniture makers. The family will cherish these pieces.
Don is survived by his wife of 69 years, Laura (Hawkins), his daughters, Donna Marston of Peaks Island and Beverly James (husband, Larry) of New Albany, MS.; brother, Theodore Ward (Jeannie) of Tucson, AZ; six grandchildren: Sheri Feeney (Peter), Frank Marston, Jr. (Alina), Matthew Marston (Rosie), Heather James, Laura Blount (Nick) and Michael James; eight great grandchildren: Liam and Connor Feeney, Luke, Anna,and Michael Marston, Thomas Marston, Jones and Colton Blount.
The family will have a graveside service in the Spring to honor his life.
