Berniece Getz, 103 passed away peacefully at the home of her son and daughter –in-law, in Grabill, IN on January 17, 2022. Berniece was born October 18, 1918 in Leo, IN. She was the daughter of the late Joseph and Lea Conrad, who were kind and loving parents and valued education. She along with her two older sisters all became teachers. Berniece graduated from Ball State Teachers College in 1938. She began her teaching career at Leo Elementary School, and retired from Fort Wayne Community Schools in 1991. She loved her Savior, her family, teaching and going to the hairdresser every Friday morning at 10:00 am. Berniece lived a long, full and rich life, being born during the Spanish Flu epidemic, and dying during the COVID pandemic. On June 7, 1941, she married Louis F. Getz. He preceded her in death on June 2, 1961. Berniece lived an incredible 103 years. In 1932, she and her family took a 3- week trip to visit relatives in California in a new 1932 Chevrolet. In 1937, she met Helen Keller at the Scottish Rite Auditorium. In the late 1940’s she started the Vacation Bible School at the Apostolic Christian Church in Leo, IN. On January 1, 2001, she was able to attend the Rose Bowl Game to watch the Purdue Boilermakers and Drew Breese play. Her grandson was a member of the Boilermaker Football team. On her 100th birthday, an open house was held, and she celebrated it along with her school friend, from Leo Class of 1936 who was 100 years of age. Thanks for being a great mom.
Berniece is survived by her children, Conrad (Charlene) Getz of Grabill, IN; David (Lynette) Getz of Fort Wayne, IN; grandchildren Sally (Jordan) Taylor of Fort Wayne, IN; Jeffrey (Carrie) Getz of Atlanta, GA; Jonathan (Stacey) Getz of Tallahassee, FL; and 8 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her infant daughter Doreen Getz, sisters, Thelma Schlatter and Dorothea Winzeler.
Funeral Service will be 10 am Friday January 28, 2022 at D.O. McComb and Sons Foster Park Funeral Home 6301 Fairfield Ave. Fort Wayne IN, with visitation one hour prior. Visitation also from 2-4 and 6-8 pm Thursday January 27, 2022 at the funeral home.
Masks have been requested for those attending the visitation and service.
