It is with heavy hearts that we announce that Virgil Joseph Armstrong, 87, passed away at Mercy Hospital in Fort Smith on November 19, 2021.He was born to Casnor and Inez Armstrong in Riceville, Iowa on May 23, 1934.
Virgil was a lifelong cattle buyer for Rath Packing in Waterloo, Iowa, and later was transferred to John Morrell in Fort Smith. He enjoyed watching the Cardinals, the Razorbacks, checking the stock market, and sitting on the front porch watching the world go by. Virgil was a perfectionist in everything he did. He will be deeply missed by his wife and children who he was always there for if they ever needed anything, to cherish every memory they had with him. He will forever be in our hearts and never be forgotten. He was a lifetime member of Immaculate Conception Church.
Virgil was preceded in death by his parents, a sister Mary Joyce Wilson, and a brother Gaylord Armstrong. He leaves behind to cherish his memories his wife of 68 years, Alice Armstrong; three children, daughter Coleen Armstrong (Gaylen Taylor) of Fort Smith, daughter, Bonnie Helmert (Bo) of Fort Smith, and son Chris Armstrong of the home; three grandchildren, Michelle Rausch, Kelly Green (Michael), and Bo Helmert, Jr. all of Fort Smith; and three great grandchildren, Kiersten, Gavin, Wyatt Green all of Fort Smith, as well as many nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be held on Monday, November 29, 2021 at 9:00 am at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church with Rosary to follow at 9:30 am and Mass of Christian Burial following at 10:00 am. Inurnment will be at Immaculate Conception Columbarium.
At the request of the family, in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Immaculate Conception Church or School or Trinity Junior High.
