It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved mother, Susan Shigeko Royo, or, as those close to her lovingly referred to her, our “Mimi”. Mimi passed away peacefully on March 19, 2025 at the age of 88 with her three daughters by her side.
Mrs. Royo was born on April 19, 1936 in Naha Okinawa, Japan. She grew up in Okinawa, and met a handsome GI, Miguel Royo. They married and built a life together in the United States, moving to Ft. Smith, Arkansas in 1973 with their three daughters.
She was a loving mother and grandmother. Her family was her greatest joy, and she devoted her life to nurturing and guiding them with warmth and encouraging them “to make good memories”. If anyone went to Mimi’s house, you would never leave hungry. She made sure you had a drink in your hand and food in your belly. Mimi was kind, loving, and a little sassy. She was little, but she loved so big. We know she is back with her precious Mike, and they are walking together again, hand in hand.
Mimi will be remembered for her kind heart, her strength, and her unwavering love for those around her. She had a talent for cooking, and her presence lit up every room she entered. Her legacy of love and compassion will live on through the lives of those she touched.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Miguel “Mike” Usatorre Royo. She is survived by her daughters, Rose Brown and husband Ken of Rogers, AR; Sharon Thomas and husband Joey of Ft. Smith, AR, and Sorne Gregory and husband Vance of Ft. Smith, AR; and 10 grandchildren.
A funeral service will be held on Monday, March 24th at Edwards Funeral in Ft. Smith at 12pm. Burial will be immediately after at the National Cemetery. Visitation with family and friends will be Sunday, March 23rd, 2pm-4pm at Edwards Funeral Home.
She will be deeply missed but forever remembered with love.
