Paul Wayne Humphrey, 89, passed away peacefully on Friday, February 23, 2024 at Mercy Hospital in Fort Smith, AR. He was born October 4, 1934 in Spencer, Iowa. He was a 1952 graduate of Quimby High School and a 1956 graduate of Iowa State University. He was an active-duty officer in the United States Army Corp of Engineers for 25 years, serving two tours as a Combat Engineer in Vietnam. He retired as a Lieutenant Colonel in Fort Smith after serving as the Post Engineer at Fort Chaffee, AR. He then began a second career, first renovating, then designing, building, and managing residential properties. Paul enjoyed playing duplicate bridge; he became a Life Master in 1987 and was an active leader at the local bridge club for over 30 years. He was a faithful supporter of Our Redeemer Lutheran Church, serving in numerous roles.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Margaret Whitford Humphrey and Howard Humphrey; and brothers, Harold and Donald. He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Joann Swenson Humphrey; a sister, Ruth Martin; daughters, Debbie Lane and husband Robert, Sarasota, FL; Donna Rogers and husband Scott, Shreveport, LA; Barbara Fox and husband Terry, Greenwood, AR; son, David Humphrey and wife, Alice, Van Buren, AR; six grandchildren, Christopher Rogers, Tialena Pulliam, Timothy Fox, Tyler Fox, Emily Humphrey and Seth Humphrey; and six great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be held at Edwards Funeral Home on Monday, February 26, 2024 from 5 – 7 pm, and a Memorial service will be held at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church on Tuesday, February 27, at 11 am. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Our Redeemer Lutheran Church, 2100 Cavanaugh Rd, Fort Smith AR.
