Mary Mixon

Mary J. Mixon, 77, of Greenwood, passed from this life September 30, 2017, in Fort Smith. She was born January 19, 1940, in Fort Smith, to the late Jean and Mabel Sbanotto Carter. She was preceded in death by her husband of 37 years, James Shelby Mixon, Sr.

She is survived by her daughter, Laura Lynn Mixon and husband Juan Goiz of Fort Smith; her son, James Shelby Mixon II and his wife Catherine of Oakdale, Minnesota; a brother, Tony Carter and his wife Susan of Fort Smith; three grandsons, Drew McCarty and Jack and Luke Mixon. She is also survived by her great granddaughter, Mary McCarty.

Mary attended St. Anne’s Academy and the University of Arkansas. She taught school for many years and retired from Greenwood Public Schools. She enjoyed her retirement years connecting with friends and spending time with her grandchildren.

A funeral mass will be Friday, October 6 at 10:30 am at St. Boniface Catholic Church with burial to follow at the U.S. National Cemetery in Fort Smith. Visitation will be from 5:00 to 6:00 pm with rosary being said at 6:00 pm in Edwards Funeral Home Chapel. Services are under the direction of Edwards Funeral Home.
