Marvin E. Mumme, Jr. was born in Little Rock, Arkansas on August 3, 1945 to Lt. Col Marvin Mumme, Sr and Merle Booe Mumme. He was the middle of three boys who, when together, could always find trouble and fun and loved each other deeply.
Marvin attended North Little Rock High School and it was here that Marvin met the love of his life, Linda Powell Mumme. The two were separated during their college years as Marvin attended the University of Texas at Austin. He was a Longhorn for life. In 1966 he wed his high school love and began medical school at UT Southwestern.
Upon completing his education and residency, Dr. Mumme served at Peterson Field Air Force Base in Colorado Springs, CO. Marvin was awarded the Medal of Commendation for the outstanding care he provided to his patients and for his service as Assistant Chief of Clinic Services.
Ultimately, Fort Smith, AR was their chosen place to plant roots. Marvin was known and loved by so many as Dr. Mumme, an orthopedic surgeon with Holt Krock Clinic and then River Valley Orthopedics for 38 years. Marvin was Board Certified in Orthopedic Surgery, a Diplomate of the American Board of Orthopedic Surgery and a Fellow of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons. He also served as Chief of Staff at Sparks Regional Medical Center as well as on the Board of Trustees.
A favorite area of service was his time spent as the team doctor for Southside High School football. His final years of service were at Mercy Orthopedics. He was a physician who cared deeply for his patients and healed many with his meticulous, skilled hands. He was respected by his colleagues, one of whom shared with him that he “gave a level of confidence to his patients that only few achieve and his dedication to each of them was legendary”.
Marvin was a faithful servant and follower of Christ and was a member of the faith community at First United Methodist Church for 45 years where He served on the Staff Parish Relations Committee. In his final years, he was blessed to be an active member of the Cornerstone Sunday School class.
At home, Marvin was known as “Dad” by his three children: Jeff, Jennifer and Jason. He was a proud and involved father who worked diligently to balance the demands of his career with the activities of his children. In his last few decades, Marvin was thrilled to be known as “PapaDoc”. He was a wonderful grandfather who adored his 5 grandchildren: Jackson, Hannah, Luke, Abby and Kenedy Jane.
Marvin loved life.
He worked hard and played harder. He was an avid hunter, fisherman, golfer, runner, traveler, water-skier, snow-skier, pilot and lake lover. He was a good friend, a loving son and brother and an impeccable surgeon. His final few years were muted by dementia to which he lost his battle on July 15,
2022.
Marvin will be welcomed into Heaven by the loving arms of those who preceded him in death; his mother and father, Marvin and Merle Mumme, his brothers, Gem and David Mumme and his son, Mark Mumme.
He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Linda Mumme, his children, Jeff Mumme of Fort Smith, AR, Jason Mumme of Fort Smith, AR, and Jennifer Mumme Bradt and her husband , Doug, of Frisco, TX and his beloved grandchildren, Jackson Mumme of Fort Smith, AR, Luke Mumme of Fayetteville, AR, Kenedy Mumme of Fort Smith, AR, Hannah Bradt Hedgpeth of Abilene, TX and Abby Bradt of Frisco, TX.
