Mae Ella Newton Jackson passed away Sunday, January 26 at the age of 89 in Fort Smith, AR. “Momma Mae” was born September 23, 1924 to the parentage of Arthur Newton Sr. and Werdna Barker of Ozark, Arkansas. Mae received her formal education at Carver School in Ozark, Arkansas. In 1946, Mae was united in holy matrimony to the late Lee Jackson Jr. To this union, ten children were born. Mrs. Mae joined King Solomon Missionary Baptist Church at an early age. She served faithfully as the President of the Missionary Society, Member of the Choir and Coordinator of Fellowship Events and Culinary Services...”The Kitchen Committee” She’ll be affectionately remembered as the “MOTHER” of the church. Mae’s glowing spiritual influence has touched everyone she had met including young families new in town to all of her babies in the community whom she cared for during her time in childcare. She was preceded in death by her husband, Lee, 1 son, George Jackson (Diane) and 2 brothers, Arthur Newton, Jr. and George Newton, sister in law, Laura Newton and daughter in law, Taffie Foster (Raymond). Those who await the joy of the great reunion are; 5 sons: Raymond Foster Jackson, Arthur Jackson both of Milwaukee, WI, Ronald Jackson, Fort Smith, AR, William Jackson, Chicago, IL and Paul Jackson, Fort Smith, AR; 4 Daughters: Zue Gray (Kenneth), Sherry Ward,of Fort Smith,AR, LaVonda Jackson, Oklahoma City, OK and Tonya Jackson Nkokheli of Fort Smith, AR; 3 Sisters, Amanda Oliver of Oklahoma City, OK, Viney Wilbon of Milwaukee, WI and Shirley West of Fayetteville, AR; 24 grandchildren, 42 great grandchildren,12 great great grandchildren and 1grand dog, as well as a host of nieces and nephews, wonderful family friends and a community who will miss her dearly. A service of celebration will be 12 noon Friday, January 31 at the New Covenant International Church, Fort Smith with interment at the U.S. National Cemetery. A visitation is scheduled from 5:30 pm until 7:30 pm Thursday, January 30 at Edwards Funeral Home Chapel. Pallbearers will be Harold Kinnard, Alan Smith, Jr., Anthony Gray, George "Billy" McGill, Eddie Arnold, Eric Lamb, Jessie Ferguson and Jerry Lee, Sr. Honorary Pallbearers will be The Deacons at New Covenant International Church.
