John P. Hunter

John P. Hunter, 52 of Fort Smith, AR passed away Friday, November 13, 2015. John is a veteran of the Gulf War. He served in the United States Army for nine years, first as a “paratrooper” during Desert Storm “Operation Provide Comfort” with the 3rd/325th Airborne Infantry, nickname “Blue Falcon”. He also served in the 82nd Airborne, nickname “All American” Fort Bragg, North Carolina.

His men called him “Old Man Hunter” because he was the ripe old age of 26, and they were just 18 years of age. John was awarded the Expert Infantry Rifleman badge; the Army Commendation, Achievement, Good Conduct (2nd award), and National Defense Service medals; the Southwest Asia Service medal with 1 bronze service star; and several service and professional development ribbons. He served with distinction and received other commendations for his dedication and bravery.

John was born on January 25, 1963 in Fort Smith, AR and graduated from Southside High School in 1981. .

Survived by his mother, Norma Sue “Susi” Bennett Green, and step-father, Phil Green of Fort Smith, AR; two sons, Johnathan F. Hunter of Rogers, AR and Jason F. Hunter of Lincoln, AR; one brother, DuCote “Cody” Hunter, and one sister, Michelle Greenfield, both of Fort Smith, AR; and a granddaughter, Danika M. Hunter of Rogers, AR; and two nephews and a niece. He is preceded in death by his father Jim Fred Hunter.

John will be remembered for his brave service to our country and his friendly spirit.

Funeral service will be at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, November 23, 2015 at Edwards Funeral Home with the burial at the U.S. National Cemetery with Military Honors under the direction of Edwards Funeral Home.

Family will visit with friends Saturday, November 21, 2015 from 1:00 p.m. – 3:00 p.m. at Edwards Funeral Home.

Pallbearers will be Bob Gaines, Tim Hampton, Steve Hampton, Raymond Hampton, Tim Stinson and Joe Chester.
