Dave served 23 years in the U.S. Navy as a specialist in cryptology and communications. He was a crew member of the USS Worden (CG-18) during its participation in the Vietnam War. His final tour of duty was as Command Master Chief at the Naval Communications Unit in Cheltenham, MD. He received numerous awards and commendations during his Navy service.
Following his honorable discharge from the Navy, Dave was a stay-at-home dad for several years. He eventually began a second career as a District Adjudications Officer for the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services in New Orleans, LA and Fort Smith, AR.
Dave’s hobbies included restoring old cars, maintaining a neighborhood swimming pool in Slidell, LA, plus his own pool for his grandchildren in Fort Smith, AR. He taught CPR classes for the American Red Cross. He fulfilled a lifelong dream of owning a cabin in the woods and spent many happy years there.
Dave is survived by his wife Janet Dement of Fort Smith, AR, daughter Priscilla Beasley of Virginia Beach, VA, son Christopher Dement of Virginia Beach, VA, daughter Renee Kelley of Alabaster, AL, daughter Katherine Wilmot of West Fork, AR, and grandchildren Christian, Alexis, Landon, Kendrie, and Khloe.
Memorial graveside service will be 11:00 am Friday, January 3, 2025 at the committal shelter of the Fort Smith National Cemetery.
