It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Walter Herbert Grainger of Fort Qu’Appelle and formerly of Lipton. Wally passed away on Tuesday, December 6, 2022 in the Regina General Hospital at the age of 78.
Walter was born in Lipton in 1944 and was the youngest of 4 children born to Melvin and Edith (Johnson) Grainger. He was a determined and courageous young man and began farming at a young age, eventually taking over the Grainger family farm heritage site. He married Beth Moxham in 1969 and together they took pride in growing their family of 5 children and expanding their farm to a new homestead.
Walter was predeceased by his parents Edith and Melvin; his father and mother-in-law Leslie and Dorothy Moxham and sister Lorraine Micheal.
Left to carry on are his beloved wife of 53 years, Beth; his children and grandchildren: Tonia (Steve) Peters, Kirsten and Kaelan; Maria (Greg) Lucyshyn, Brooklyne, Matthew, Alexis and Carter; Robert (Jennifer Villafuerte), Tatiana; Nikolle (Lawrence) Wurz, Tyson, Kaidon, Jaymes and Levi; and Danita (Jake) Wasylenko, Isabella and Selena; Tobias Reinshagen who was an extention to our family, and many extended family and friends.
Wally’s passion for people and the outdoors kept him busy. If he wasn’t running a piece of farm equipment (like the Cat), working in the field or with his cattle, fixing in the garage, attending picnics or camping, working at Conservapak, he was enjoying hunting, curling, baseball, hockey, football, track and field, volleyball, or his favorite pastime visiting. His greatest joy was sharing his life and exploring the world with his wife, Beth. Their adventures around the world will forever be treasured! He shared his love of people and sports with his children and grandchildren and spent time most days on the phone with one of his kids or grandkids keeping up with all that was going on. Wally, in recent years, spent his days alongside Beth as the assistant CEO of the store, and could often be found visiting with a friend or even a stranger.
Wally enjoyed each day to the best of his ability by living and finding hope and courage with each sunrise. Courage comes in all forms, and he embodied the word courage every day of his life. Life’s journey is not to arrive at the grave safely in a well preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways, totally worn out, shouting “Holy shit…What a ride!”
A public visitation for Walter was held in Tubman Funeral Home, Fort Qu'Appelle, Saskatchewan on Friday, December 9, 2022 from 7:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. The funeral service was held in the Lipton Community Hall, Lipton, Saskatchewan on Saturday, December 10, 2022 at 11:00 a.m. with Rev. Jo Mader officiating. Reception followed the service. Following the reception, family and friends were invited to an interment in the Kelliher Memorial Gardens.
