October 11, 1939 - December 3, 2018
Age 79 years
It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of our dear mother, grandmother and great-grandma Jan.
Janet was born in Winnipeg and moved to Vancouver at a young age. At the age of 16 she travelled to Chicago and became a certified professional dog groomer. This was a career of passion as she was a true animal lover! It was in Vancouver where she met her future husband Gordon Huber. Gord was a Saskatchewan farmer and they married and moved back to Saskatchewan, firstly living in Fort Qu’Appelle and then returning to Gordon’s family farm where they began their own farming venture. They were blessed with three children and also became Foster parents to many children in crisis. In the early 1980’s, Jan decided to share her love of animals and incorporate her grooming expertise in a business venture.
Pets-A-Plenty opened its doors and so began a 30 plus years of service in the Fort Qu’Appelle Valley. Jan was a well respected business woman who had a wealth of knowledge in pet care. Her grooming business was always busy with an average of 40 dogs or cats groomed per week! She continued operating Lipton Kennels Reg’d, breeding and showing Boxers and Shetland Sheepdogs. All the while, farming was still a big part of her life. The family farm became a pilot project site for Community Shared Agriculture, operating under the name of H.O.H Shared Family Farm. This saw the family cultivate 15 acres of a vegetable garden along side of a commercial kitchen processing operation. The farm also incorporated grain fed chickens, turkeys, beef and pork. It was a crazy-busy time but one that brought great satisfaction.
Family was very important to Jan and she loved watching her children grow and begin families of their own. Her grandchildren and great grandchildren were the light of her life! She loved visiting with them, building puzzles, playing cribbage and teaching them to love and care for pets.
Jan was diagnosed with terminal cancer in October 2017. She was adamant to remain at home and her wish was granted. November of 2018 brought a steady decline in health and she received palliative care in her home. A huge thank you to the excellent home care service team, with heartfelt thanks to her nurse Cathy Berg who was absolutely wonderful to Mom and the family.
Our Mom (Gma Jan) passed away in the early morning hours of December 3, surrounded in love by those closest to her.
