The family of Patricia Ann (Young) Maleski will celebrate her life with a Funeral Mass on Friday, March 24, 2023 from 11:00 AM to 12:00 PM at St. Helen's Catholic Church, 2000 20th St, Vero Beach, FL 32960.
Pat passed away at the age of 82 after a sudden stroke. Born in 1940 to Jean and George Toohey Young, Pat and her four siblings were raised in Vero Beach. She attended Rosarian Academy and graduated as Valedictorian of Vero Beach High School in 1958. Pat then went on to St. Vincent Hospital School of Nursing and worked as a Registered Nurse in Gainesville which is where she met Lou. In 1964, Pat married Lou Maleski which started a partnership that lasted 59 years. Together, Pat and Lou raised two children, Lisa and Keith in Marlborough, MA and then later in Treasure Island, FL.
Family time was spent swimming in the pool, boating, and reading. Pat was an avid reader and weekly trips to the library carried on for most of her life. Education was also important to Pat so she went on to get her Bachelor's degree in Nursing and her Masters in Adult Education. She worked as an Intensive Care nurse, Diabetes Education coordinator and finally the Manager of the Joslin Diabetes Center. Pat volunteered with the American Diabetes Association and served both in local and state positions. She won the ADA Volunteer of the Year award in 1994 and the AADE Diabetes Educator of the Year in 2006. Pat enjoyed traveling to the many conventions where she could have an Irish Coffee after a long day and finally retired in 2009.
After retirement, Pat and Lou began to travel in earnest by participating in Tauck Tours which allowed them to explore our country, Canada and most of Europe. Pat loved her exercise classes, daily walks, book clubs and spending time with family and friends. In addition to visiting her children, Pat was a devoted sister and made yearly trips back to Vero to see her siblings, nieces, nephews, and cousins. She most loved spending time with her grandchildren, JD and Laurel, and enjoyed reading to them and watching them grow up. Pat’s family and friends will miss her dearly, but she will live in our hearts forever.
Donations in-lieu of flowers can be made in Pat Maleski’s name to Friends of IRC Library or Coastal Connections for Sea Turtles (www.Coastal-connections.org)
