James Barrett Harrison, Jr., 82, went to be with the lord December 20th, 2018. Known to his friends as Jay, he was born in Philadelphia, PA, son of James B., Sr. and Lillian H. Harrison. He moved to Fort Pierce with his parents in 1946 where he attended local schools, graduated from Fort Pierce High School in 1953 and graduated from the University of Florida in 1960 with a Bachelor of Civil Engineering. While living in Fort Pierce, his father, J. B. (Jim) Harrison was notably active in civic affairs and was a member of numerous charitable and civic organizations.
After graduating from college, he moved with his family to Fort Lauderdale in 1960. While in Broward County, Mr. Harrison was gainfully employed with several engineering firms as a civil engineer where he specialized in the design and contract administration of numerous water and waste water treatment facilities for investor owned utilities and municipalities. In Broward County, he was a member of the Florida Engineering Society, Elks Lodge No. 1898, American Legion Post No. 142 and Coral Ridge Presbyterian Church where he was an usher for 13 years. He served 9 years in the Florida Army National Guard.
Mr. Harrison enjoyed several hobbies including poster and portrait art, photography, singing karaoke, and playing guitar and banjo, washboard and spoons.
He is predeceased by his beloved wife of 22 years, Marion Swenson Harrison who passed away on October 17th, 1987. On September 11th, 1994 he married Miriam Elizabeth Harrison (Bettye Carlton) of Fort Pierce who passed away on November 16th, 2005. His brother, Walter Albert Harrison passed away on December 20th, 1999.
In February, 2006, Mr. Harrison moved back to his childhood home of Fort Pierce where he was a member of Westside Baptist Church and Elks Lodge No. 1520. In November, 2014, he joined Indian River Presbyterian Church in Fort Pierce.
He is survived by his son, James Alan Harrison of Melbourne, his daughter, Sharon Kay DiMarco of Sebastian and his step daughter, Robyn M. Messina of Santa Barbara, California, and 6 grandchildren.
Visitation will December 29th, 2018 from 1-2:00 pm followed by memorial service in the chapel of Aycock Funeral Home, 6026 N. Us Highway 1, Fort Pierce, FL. Burial will follow at Hillcrest Memorial Gardens next to his wife and parents in the Harrison plot. Arrangements are by Aycock Funeral Home in Fort Pierce.
