Edna Katherine Weisner Lamont, 97, went to be with her Lord and Savior peacefully in her sleep on the morning of Monday, June 17, 2013. At the time of her death, she was residing in Key West Place at Willowbrooke Court in Indian River Estates in Vero Beach, FL.
Born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, she was a woman of many talents and considerable skills. A graduate of Olney High School, she went to the Philadelphia College of the Bible (now Cairn University). After marrying her high school sweetheart, Robert J. Lamont, on December 26, 1942, she accompanied him to Princeton Theological Seminary. She was a secretary at the seminary and often spoke about her encounters at afternoon tea with a “wild-haired, but kindly old man” (Albert Einstein).
Edna was first and foremost a devoted wife of 69 years to Robert, and cheerfully endured the joys and challenges of being a pastor’s wife. Through pastorates in the blue collar town of Darby, Pennsylvania, to the Philadelphia mainline suburb of Narberth, and lastly to a downtown church in the city of Pittsburgh, she was a model of love, compassion and friendship for church members, visitors and strangers.
She was a mother to four children, Robert, Karen, Kenneth (deceased), and Joanne. Likely the cause of more than a few grey hairs, she tried to teach her children to be obedient and respectful while instilling in them the Christian beliefs and values she learned growing up as the daughter of German immigrants.
Edna was a homemaker who made absolutely sure the manse or home was perfectly clean for church members, corporate directors or visitors. Her husband used to joke, “It is wonderful to have company so I can see the sofa again and especially those towels that have been hidden in the closet.” As the wife of a pastor and then the CEO of the country’s oldest life insurance company, she was a gracious hostess whether it was for special holiday or staff functions of 50 or more, or for dinners after church with friends and members where often “the roast beef would have to be sliced a little thinner” to accommodate the unexpected guests.
Among her other skills and talents were playing the piano, card games (especially “Hand & Foot”), and knitting and crocheting. She loved to write letters and kept up correspondence with thousands of people over the years. She touched countless lives wherever she lived or traveled.
Edna is survived by her son, Robert J. Lamont, Jr., her daughters, E. Karen Shuter and Joanne M. Hathorn, all of Vero Beach, FL; grandson, Joshua Hathorn of St. Petersburg, FL; and, step-granddaughter, Katherine Sumpter, of Atlanta, GA. She was preceded in death by her husband, Rev. Dr. Robert J. Lamont; her parents, Charles and Hedwig Weisner; her infant son, Kenneth; and, her sister, Ruth Rodisch.
Memorial contributions may be made to Westminster Presbyterian Church, 2555 58th Avenue, Vero Beach, FL 32966.
