Born in Hoboken, NJ, he lived in Lyndhurst, NJ before moving to Fort Myers Beach in 2003. He attended Stevens Institute of Technology in Hoboken and was in the US Army stationed at Fort Dix NJ as a radio operator, where he also attained designation as a sharpshooter. After his military service he joined Teamsters Local 560 and was a truck driver for various companies, and moved to Lyndhurst where he raised his family until he retired in 1996.
Vinny was an avid sports fan, especially of baseball, as a childhood fan of the NY Giants, and a lifelong fan of the NY Yankees. He volunteered with local sports organizations in Lyndhurst, primarily as an umpire for the Lyndhurst Little League and a referee for the women’s volleyball team. He also played softball with his Teamsters local in New Jersey and continued to play after he moved to Florida. He was a car aficionado, from his first Cadillac to his latest Corvette. He was an animal lover of his children’s many pets, particularly Luke and Buddy. Vinny also contributed to many non-profit organizations, particularly those involving veteran services and those supporting children. Most of all he loved to spend time with friends and entertain them with stories of his life experiences.
Vinny was the son of the late Carmella (Lily) (nee Dello Stritto) and Joseph DiMurro of Hoboken, NJ and Hollywood, FL. He was brother to the late Carmella Rzucidlo, Neil DiMurro and Anthony DiMurro. He is survived by his children, Joan DiMurro, Joseph DiMurro and his wife Shannon, John DiMurro and his wife Vicky, and Janet Ferri and her husband Michael, and his granddaughter Lily DiMurro, the light of his life. He also leaves behind many beloved nieces and nephews.
A memorial gathering will be held at Hodges-Kiser Funeral Home at 9231 Cypress Lake Drive in Fort Myers on Thursday, May 26. Friends are invited to attend from 6:00 – 8:00 pm. A mass will be said at Church of the Ascension on Fort Myers Beach on Friday, May 27 at 10:00 am, to which all are welcome. Interment will be in Holy Cross Cemetery in North Arlington NJ at a later date.
