Richard C Meyer Jr.

Richard Charles Meyer, Jr. passed away on June 28, 2021 in Fort Myers, FL, aged 97. Born and raised in New Brunswick, NJ, he was a long-time East Brunswick, NJ resident before retiring with his wife to Sanibel, FL and thereafter to Shell Point Retirement Community in Fort Myers, FL.

After graduating from New Brunswick High School in 1941, he attended Newark College of Engineering and Rutgers University, earning a BS degree in Electrical Engineering in 1948. He was a proud World War II veteran, having served in the United States Army and stationed in the Philippines.

In 1948, he married his high school sweetheart, Gloria Lee Stringer, at Grace Cathedral in San Francisco. The couple returned to New Jersey where Rich worked for the United States Atomic Energy Commission. From 1955 until his retirement, he founded and was president of Richard Meyer Electric, Inc., an electrical contracting firm in South Brunswick, NJ.

In 1952, on weekends and after work, Rich built the family home on the shores of Farrington Lake in East Brunswick. In his leisure time, he enjoyed golf and piloting his Cessna 182. He was a director of Raritan Valley Savings and Loan, a past president and 40-year member of the East Brunswick Kiwanis Club, a past president of Brookside Swim Club in Milltown, and a founder and supporter of East Jersey Olde Towne. He was a member of the National Electrical Contractors Association, the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers, the Rutgers Alumni Association, and the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association. He served on the Building Advisory Committees for both East Brunswick and South Brunswick Townships.

In retirement, Rich spent many hours on the golf course and volunteered for Habitat for Humanity, Meals on Wheels, and the Sanibel Library. He was a member of the Congregational UCC Church of Sanibel. He became a genealogy buff and later shared his research skills as a volunteer in the Genealogy Lab at Shell Point. He was a founding member of the Shell Point Men’s Golf Association and was its secretary for 10 years. He advocated for a Men’s 9-Hole Golf League and enjoyed playing well into his 90s.

Rich was predeceased by Gloria, his beloved wife of 65 years, and his brother, Robert Wallace Meyer. He is survived by his three daughters: Karen Meyer Barrett, Melissa Meyer Mash (Tony), and Amanda Meyer Feher (Julius), six grandchildren, and five great-grandsons.

A memorial service will be held later this summer at Franklin Memorial Park in North Brunswick, NJ. If desired, donations in his memory can be made to The Myositis Association, a charitable organization dear to his heart, as myositis affected his wife’s later years. www.myositis.org

Rich/Dad/Pop Pop will be greatly missed and forever remembered as an exemplary and loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, father-in-law, family patriarch, and friend.
