Joanne was born on January 22, 1936 at Sibley Memorial Hospital in Washington, D.C. She attended Benjamin Orr Elementary School in Washington, D.C. Her family moved to Annandale, Virginia in 1948. After graduating from Fairfax High School in Fairfax, Virginia in 1954, she attended Radford University in Radford, Virginia; the University of Colorado (Boulder); and George Mason University in Fairfax, Virginia, graduating in 1989.
Joanne married John G. Stevens (1957-1978) and together they had three children, Susan, Mark, and Melissa.
She retired from Fairfax County, Virginia Government as a Management Analyst after 21 years of service. After retirement she filled her days enjoying her many friends, children and grandchildren. She traveled with friends and relatives to France, Alaska, Singapore, Cambodia, Puerto Rico, Costa Rica, Canada, and Mexico. She loved a good book, a tall glass of home brewed iced tea with lemon and mint, flowers in the garden, and good food. Her kids and grandkids could count on her at any time to share a meal, play a game, or offer her own particular brand of practical wisdom, including “Well, if there’s nothing you can do, my advice is don’t worry about it,” and “It’s probably fine…if it’s still there in two weeks, call the doctor,” and “A little dirt won’t kill them.”
She is survived by her children Susan Lummis (Jeffrey), Mark Stevens (Sandra) and Melissa Delaney (Jack); her sister, Nancy Cooper of Mechanicsville, Virginia; grandchildren Christopher Stevens (Shana), Brittany Stevens, Kristina Miller (Douglas), Stephanie Beavers (Traymon), Kevin Delaney, Jeanette Delaney, Ethan Delaney and John Delaney; Great Grandchildren Hailey Miller, Ivy Beavers and Everett Beavers; niece Jennifer Fletcher (Christopher) and nephew Stephen Cooper (Karen); her sister in law Cladd Stevens (Ron Prineas); numerous great and great great nieces and nephews.
