Joe was born October 14, 1939, in LaPorte, Indiana to John James Davie and Dorothy Elizabeth (Hash) Davie. He was the oldest of 4 children. Joe was trained as a pathologist and had a successful academic career at Washington University from 1972-1987, including service as head of the Department of Microbiology and Immunology from 1975-1987. Throughout his career, Joe held several senior level research positions and board positions for top pharmaceutical companies including Biogen, Inc. and G.D. Searle & Co.
Joe authored or co-authored more than 175 publications. He also served on the editorial board of medical journals such as Diabetes, American Journal of Pathology, and Journal of Cellular Immunology.
Joe received his A.B, M.A, and Ph.D. in bacteriology from Indiana University and his M.D. from Washington University School of Medicine.
Joe loved traveling the world, the great outdoors, reading, music, photography, artwork, Boston cream donuts, and banana cream pie. Throughout his travels, he collected amazing artwork and décor from around the world.
Joe is survived by his wife of 61 years, Janet Sue (Whorwell) Davie. Joe and Janet met when they were 12 years old. They had 3 daughters, Shelley Murray, Jennifer Brown, and Melissa Byrne (Tom). He was a proud grandfather to Jessica Vaughn (Eric), Joseph Murray, Julie Doucet (Chris), Tyler and Kelsey Brown, Kalin and Madie Byrne, and great grandfather to Alayna Byrne. Joe always enjoyed spending time with all his grandchildren.
