He is survived by his wife, Jackie of 59 years, and son, John D. Mills (Kimberly Ann Chaps) of Fort Myers, FL. He is also survived by a sister-in-law, Emily Mills; niece, Suzanne (Tom) Eades and their children, Emma Grace and Charlotte; brother-in-law, Dawson C. (Georgianna) McDaniel and children, George (Christina) and Anna (Allison); nephew, Alan Daniels; nieces, Kimberlee (Dutch) Schulze and son, Grant (Brianna); Brenda (Anthony) Montella and sons Glades and Griffin and daughters, Victoria and Gianna; Cindy (Travis) Johnson.
He was preceded in death by his daughter, Joy M. Mills; parents, Richard and Lula Mills; brother, Charles R. Mills; mother and father-in law, Dawson and Etta McDaniel; sister and brother-in-law, Bobbie Jo and Franky Daniels.
Bill attended public school in Birmingham. He graduated from Auburn University with a degree in Business Administration. He began his career working for Crawford & Co. in Miami. He came to Fort Myers after Hurricane Donna and worked for Allstate Insurance as a Claims Supervisor and was later transferred to Tampa. Fireman Funds hired him as Claims Manager for the State of Florida. After working in the Tampa Bay area for a number of years, State Farm offered him a position to return and work for them in Fort Myers. Goldberg, Goldstein, Buckley, PA hired him as a para-legal, a position he held for 22 years. He was appointed to the Lee County School Board and served from 1972–1982.
He leaves many cousins, nieces, nephews, and a host of friends that will miss him. A private family service has been planned.
