Jay Meyer passed away peacefully in his sleep on Friday Morning, February 23rd, 2024, leaving wife of 39 years, Tricia Meyer, Children: Martin (Mary) George, Michael George, Todd (Mindy) Meyer, Tami (Jeffery) Peters, Tonya (Steve) Smith and four grandchildren. Sisters: Shirley (Don) Meyers, Marilyn (Dave) Barry and Brother: Frederick (Mary) Meyer.
Jay was born in Cincinnati, Ohio to parents Leonard Frederick Meyer and Dorothy Burton and grew up playing many sports…but baseball was his passion. Later, going to Elder High School he was introduced to billiards…pool became his game of choice…and he was a pro. He continued playing competitively through college, University of Cincinnati…but here he was also introduced to golf. He continued all three of these through his adult years and was extremely good at them all.
In his 30’s he met and married his first wife Amy Sullenberger and they had Todd and Tonya. Life was busy…they traveled a lot because his job with Roadway Express had him trouble shooting company venues in the northern states and Canada. He began his career in sales at Roadway Express in Dayton, OH, then moved up the management ranks in Ann Arbor, MI, Toronto, ON, Buffalo, NY, Erie, PA, Rochester, NY, Akron OH…finishing up his career in Indianapolis, IN as District Manager…then in 1999, after 36 years with the company, he retired to Fort Myers, Fl.
In 1984, Jay, now divorced from Amy, met and married Tricia George, who, with children Mike, Marty & Tami, completed a large and fun loving, rather rowdy family. For another 15 years the two worked, played and enjoyed life…first in Akron, OH then in Avon, IN. The beginning of 1999 found them moving to Fort Myers Beach, FL to ‘retire’…then to Fort Myers, Fl…Jay & Tricia, not ready to retire, went into Real Estate and started a new career as the Owner Broker of Meyer Mortgage Inc., Real Estate Broker / Owner at Meyer & Associates Realty Group for over 10 years…finally hanging their licenses as ‘The Meyer Team’ with Premier Florida Realty, Fort Myers, where they continue to work.
Work wasn’t everything, however, as they boated the gulf…Jay captaining his craft well; they drove motorcycles with friends everywhere possible; took a cruise or two for the fun of it with friends; visits to Key West were a necessity, and so much more. Jay loved and continued to play golf, with a large group of ‘golf buddies’ who traveled to a multitude of courses throughout Florida, with an occasional foray to Indianapolis, Georgia, Myrtle Beach and anywhere beautiful, green and challenging. He loved his new community of Heritage Cove, spending a few years on the board, Golfing in the league, Bowling, playing Bocce…he loved that…life was good!
Jay was described by a friend as a ‘gentle giant.’ He was a wonderful husband and father…dedicated, passionate, outgoing, fun loving, kind, and he truly loved his friends, family (and puppy Daisy)…showing compassion for the world at large he helped with food delivery during Ian, put together a child’s bed for an adopted family, donated to our beach service personne…waiters, waitresses and bartenders, during their job losses after our many hurricanes, he and Tricia personally delivering food to their homes…he was multifaceted, he loved life…he will be missed.
