Freddy Lee Davis was born on July 24, 1953 to William and Kathryn West Davis of Pinckneyville, Illinois. He was named by his brother, Raymond Wheatley. Fred attended Southern Baptist College and Ouachita University in Arkansas, where he met his wife, Sally Misar. Led by their love for Christ, Fred and Sally moved into the Jesus Center, a Christian Community in Little Rock, where they ministered for two years. They were married on November 30, 1975 at the Memphis location and recently celebrated their 40th anniversary. The couple returned to Fred's southern Illinois roots to raise their family. They were blessed with the birth of three children who continue to bring them much joy: Melissa Hendrix (husband Dan), Sharon Davis, and Benjamin Davis (wife Stephanie) all of Fort Myers. Fred has two grandsons, Jaymin Lee Davis (2) and Andrew Lee Hendrix (1 week). Elim Ward Davis will join Ben and Steph's family in two weeks.
Fred worked at Phelps Dodge Cable and Wire in DuQuoin and later at Continental General Tire in Mt. Vernon for 23 years. When their youngest graduated high school, the family fulfilled Fred's life-long dream of moving to Fort Myers, Florida. It was here that he found the job he loved as life itself with The Men's Wearhouse. His strong interpersonal relationships and people skills caused him to be endeared by staff and customers alike. The Men's Wearhouse has been greatly supportive of Fred throughout his four year battle with Multiple Myeloma, a rare blood cancer. He worked as he could through severe treatments, but declining health forced him to stay home the past 20 months. His daughter Sharon, who has Down Syndrome, was his attentive caregiver during this difficult time. Fred had a love and tenacity for life that astounded both doctors and family alike.
Fred was an avid reader and enjoyed collecting autographed copies of his favorite books. His most cherished book was the Bible, it's words being inscribed on Fred's heart. His strong Christian faith was revealed in all he did and encompassed all that he was. He was a faithful, loving husband and enjoyed spoiling Sally with beautiful floral bouquets and Norman Love chocolates. He loved to make her laugh, a gift he cherished to the end. Fred was a devoted father through each stage of his children's lives, embracing their marriages and spouses. He adored his extended family and invested himself completely with his whole heart. All of the love and devotion he gave returned to him ten times over. This precious man will be greatly missed, but we are confident that we will be reunited in heaven.
His name was Fred Davis.
The world had a glimpse. Now it's heaven's turn!
