Calvin Edward Eells “Cal”, 100, of Cypress Cove Care Center, passed away Thursday, August 18, 2022. Cal has always felt the he has lived a charmed life. Cal leaves a beloved partner, Katharine “Kit” Olen; daughter, Katharine Eells Scribner and her husband Dana of Middlebury, VT; a son, Robinson Edward Eells and his wife Irene of Manchester, NH; 12 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren.
Cal was born in Boonville, NY on October 9, 1921, but lived in Rutledge, PA, Orchard Park, NY and East Hampton, NY before attending college in Pennsylvania. Like so many of his age, he was drafted into the service during WWII. After Officer Candidate School at Fort Knox, KY, Cal was trained in tank warfare at Camp Campbell, TN. Later he was assigned to the European Theatre where he was a Lieutenant and tank Platoon leader in the 2nd Armored Division from Saint-Lo, France to Aachan, Germany where his tank was destroyed by enemy fire. He was the only of his crew to survive. Cal spent more than a year in Army hospitals from Belgium to San Francisco suffering from burns and severe hepatitis which caused by blood transfusions given to him in Belgium. He was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross of heroism, among other medals and citations. Pushed by ambition, he stayed in the Army Reserves and was separated as a Lt. Colonel in the Infantry.
Cal was a graduate of Lafayette College before entering the military. After separation from the Army he was advised at Lafayette to look into public relations as a career and was selected out of more than 400 candidates for a master’s degree in journalism at Columbia University. Before graduation he found employment in three newspapers in Portland, ME, where he was to be married to Barbara Ann Robinson in 1947. He calls her influence on his life a gift from God. They were married for 65 years before she was called to meet Jesus and live with his heavenly promise.
Cal’s professional life included working for newspapers, producing and hosting a TV show on medical topics for the Maine Medical Center, holding positions as an educator in Portland, ME, both in the classroom an administration. After earning a Doctorate in Education from Boston University, Cal served as Superintendent of Schools in Sudbury and Gloucester, MA and New Fairfield, CT. In Danbury, CT, Cal ended his career in education as it began, as a classroom teacher.
Cal lead a long and full life thanks to his faith in God and the many friendships that have given him so much. If asked “Is there a God with a son, Jesus?” “You bet”, he would reply.
