Born in 1931, William Perry grew up on a farm in the heart of the Deep South of Monticello, Florida. At age 18, he took odd jobs, first as a shoe store sales man, then eventually as a janitor at a small Florida retail bank, City National Bank.
At night, he would take accounting classes at what would eventually become Miami Dade Community College, working his way from janitor to teller; from teller; to head teller; from head teller to Vice President. All along the way he was “first black” both at his bank and all over Miami Beach.
First black teller, First black. First head teller; Vice President. One of the First black to buy property on Miami Beach First black to join the local Miami Beach Rotary club. After 34 and a half years, he would
retire as Vice President, second only to the President.
This is my father. He is my hero. He is my largest inspiration in life. While my love for him runs deep; my admiration for him runs deeper.
