Virginia “Ginnie” Ann Kearns, born January 24, 1928, passed on into the loving arms of our Lord on May 24, 2016, in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Ginnie was born in Dayton, Ohio to Corrine and Ernest Steiner and had one sibling, her late sister Evelyn. Ginnie spent her childhood in Dayton, graduated from Fairview High School and attended 2 years at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio. In 1948, she married Richard “Dick” Kearns, whom she had known since early childhood. Ginnie and Dick moved to Fort Lauderdale in 1962, attended First Presbyterian Church, and devoted herself to her children’s education as a Pine Crest parent. For many years, she volunteered at “Insight for the Blind” narrating audio magazines such as “Forbes”. She especially loved narrating children’s audio books for the Library of Congress for which she received 2 special commendations.
Following her love for geography, Ginnie adored travel, and along with her husband Dick, made several round-the-world tours and countless destination trips. Art was Ginnie’s personal passion and a reflection of her heart; she produced many watercolors and oil paintings. In their early years of marriage, Ginnie and Dick spent much of their free time boating on Lake Erie and after 1962, in the Florida Keys and the Bahamas where they built a summer home. Later, they spent their summers in Boothbay Harbor, Maine where they owned a condo while continuing to enjoy boating.
Ginnie is remembered for her sweet and patient personality, her love of nature, her passion for art, sunsets and the ocean, and most especially for her deep devotion to her husband and family. She exuded “Joie de Vivre”, an exuberant enjoyment of life, always smiling, laughing and loving life.
Ginnie is survived by her husband, Dick, after 67 years of marriage; two children, Thomas (wife Joanna) and Nancy (husband Michael); four grandchildren, Susan, Lauren, Brian and Meredith; and two great grandchildren, Carter and Maxwell.
In her honor, please consider giving to Ginnie’s favorite charities; First Presbyterian Church of Fort Lauderdale, Broward Community Foundation, Insight for the Blind, and Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens (Boothbay, Maine).
