He was the beloved husband of the late Catherine L. Kavanagh for 55 years. Ron is survived by his devoted & loving children, Karen E. Martin (Jack), Joseph Kavanagh (Eileen), & Debra Gore (Phillip, deceased), loving sister to Florence Whaley of NY, grandfather to Joseph J., PJ, Michael, Brittany, Kimberly, & Stephanie, great-grandchildren, numerous family members, friends, & associates.
Ron had a colorful life. He joined the Army, US Post Office, NYC Port Authority Police, and then, the NYPD. He became a Detective and was head of homicide in NYC. Ron retired from NYPD in 1975, moved with his wife, Catherine to Davie, FL and lived there until Hurricane Wilma destroyed their home of 30 years. He traveled and enjoyed life. His passion for law enforcement never ceased. He was the Sgt. Supervisor for Hacienda Village, FL, a U.S. Marshall for the federal government, and best remembered for training the police cadets as the coordinator/instructor at Broward Community College Police Academy for many years. His daughter, Debra, was one of his police cadets in 1982.
Ron was also a member of the Screen Actors Guild and was in movies with Burt Reynolds, "Where The Boys Are II", and various commercials. He was Past-President of the "Broward 10-13 Club" for retired police officers, was in the Honor Guard for the 10-13, and Secretary/Treasurer of the FOP Lodge 32. He marched in the St. Patrick's Day parades in Ft. Lauderdale & NYC in full dress uniform. Ron was proud to be a member of the NYPD and all that the uniform stood for. “Make America Great Again”.
Viewing will be held at FOREST LAWN FUNERAL HOME, 2401 SW 64 Ave. Davie, FL (954) 792-9360 on Friday, 10/28/16 from 4:00 PM - 8:00 PM. On Saturday, 10/29/16, Service from 11:00 AM - 12:00 PM. Burial immediately following on premises.
