Robert Andrew Balog was born in New Britain, Connecticut on January 14, 1944. He died peacefully in his sleep on April 29, 2022. He was seventy-eight years old at the time of his death. Bob attended the University of West Florida where he earned a Bachelor's Degree in Education. He also attended the University of Northern Colorado where he earned his Master's Degree in Curriculum and Instruction. Bob worked as an elementary school teacher with Miami Dade County Public Schools for thirty-eight years. He spent most of his career at Miami Shores Elementary School. He retired in 2007.
Bob had always loved his extensive Lionel Toy Train Collection. After retiring, he became an active member of the Florida Citrus Model Train Society. The club meets twice a week for breakfast. They also put on train shows at museums and libraries. The club volunteers in schools to teach train safety to children.
Bob also had an extensive collection of fishing poles and reels. He regularly went deep sea fishing when he was younger. The last few years he was unable to go fishing, but you could catch him regularly cleaning and polishing the fishing poles as he sat on his back patio.
As a child, Bob made his Holy Communion and Confirmation at St. Rose of Lima Church in Miami Shores, Florida. After moving to Broward County in 1991, Bob became a member of St. Gregory the Great Catholic Church. Bob supports St. Gregory's despite being unable to attend due to failing health.
Bob is survived by his wife of fifty-two years, Judy. Bob and Judy have three children -- Stephanie (Herb) Epstein, Robert Balog Jr., and Steven Balog. In addition, Bob had four grandchildren -- Stephen Epstein, Ryan Epstein, Ava Balog, and Rylee Balog. Last year, Bob's first great-grandchild, Luke Epstein was born. Bob is also survived by his sister, Judy McKee, and many nieces and nephews.
Bob was preceded in death by his aunts -- Mary Balog, and Susan Balog, and his brother -- Kenneth Balog.
Visitation will be held on May 4, 2022 from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. at Forest Lawn South Cemetery, 2401 Davie Road, Davie, FL 33317 (954) 792-9360. A Celebration of Life will be held from 11:00 a.m. to noon. A graveside Committal Service will occur from noon to 12:30 p.m. A Family and Friends Reception with a light lunch will occur from 12:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m.
