Richard Malcolm Wright passed away on September 16, 2021. Richard was born in New York City to Daphne and Lloyd Wright on August 23, 1970. His family relocated to Kingston, Jamaica when he was 7 years old. While living in Jamaica, Richard graduated from Mona Preparatory School and Campion College and co-founded Ambassadors Disco. He returned to New York City as a teenager where he attended Lehman College and later graduated from Hampshire College. He received his Master’s Degree in Expressive Arts Therapy from the California Institute of Integral Studies.
Richard was an artist who used many mediums to express himself and help others. He was a dj, a writer, a visual artist, an activist, an afro futurist and a specialist in consent culture and healthy masculinity. He became popular as dj flood while living in Oakland, California and spent his final years residing in South Florida. Richard was the consummate community person. Whether he was in Kingston, Oakland, South Florida or New York City, he connected with people and played an integral role in enhancing people’s lives. He was particularly active in the art community and was an advocate for several social justice movements.
Rich leaves behind his heartbroken family, friends and communities that adore him: his mother, Daphne Witter, aunt Elaine Witter; sisters Donna Waldfogel and Ghenete “G” Wright Muir, close cousin Dale Hendricks and wife, Nicole Hendricks; brothers-in-law David I. Muir and Dean Waldfogel; nephews Masai, Kairo and Jordan; Godchildren Story and Rio; little cousins Ella and Myles; uncle John Wright and aunt Audrey Wright; aunt Daphne Sessing; his Wright cousins in the WhatsApp group; several close friends, including his best friends Steve Wilson and Erin Lee and many other relatives and friends.
Richard has touched countless lives. His legacy will live on through his writings, music, art and loved ones. There will be a Celebration of Life ceremony on October 30, 2021 at 4pm EDT with a virtual livestream.
