Melanie their is so much that I never told you because I was scared. You were my first love,as you had said after 20 years you do know me.May your family have the peace and remember all the smiles you bring to our face.

Melanie and I as little girls playing in the neighborhood keeps running through my mind and after you all moving her calling and rubbing it in she was at the beach.  Keep the wonderful memories in your heart and cherish them.   I am so sorry about your loss and praying for you and Brian.  Like Tracy said she was loved by mom and dad they were definately in heaven to greet her.

Both children were so much fun and easy to take care of.  Mel was one of the best butterfly stroke swimmers I had ever seen.  She for sure gave me some competition while swimming with the Duluth Thunderbolts!  May your heart find peace during these very sad days of your life.  Girls dream of having a mother as loving, involved and supportive as you Debbie.  Mel earned her wings and is at peace. Hugs.

To my dearest loving daughter,

Before you were born I only dreamed and prayed for a healthy baby. I had already planned to name you Melanie Marie if you were a girl. I had chosen the name Melanie from the movie Gone with the Wind because the character Melanie in the movie was such a generous and loving soul. Somehow, deep in my heart, I knew that you would be born, and would remain throughout your life, much like “Gone with the Wind's Melanie”, a very generous and loving soul. 

When I first saw you I cried many tears... but the tears I cried were tears of joy. As time went on my instinct that you would be so caring and loving was confirmed. Your concern for others especially manifested itself just after you saw the Broadway play "Annie". I had taken you to see the play in celebration of your 9th birthday. Although you appreciated the performance itself you were very distraught at the end of the play. With a sad face, you came to your dad and me and expressed your disappointment with the way orphans were treated and wanted to do something about their plight. 

For your birthday party that year you invited the entire third grade class, which ended up being about 60 children. You asked that each child not bring a gift for you but, instead, bring gifts or money for the children at the United Methodist Children's Home. When your dad and I explained to you that we would not be supplementing your birthday gift you rapidly replied that this would be Ok as you already HAD your birthday gift. Somewhat perplexed, when we inquired about this mysterious gift you replied, “I have the greatest gift of all. I already have my mom and dad.” 

To continue, as time went on we proudly watched as you excelled in so many different areas. You were a championship swimmer specializing in the "butterfly", a wonderful classical pianist, a dedicated member of the drill squad for the St. Thomas Aquinas Raiders (this is not to mention the fact that you also were selected to be in the gifted program when you attended school in Duluth, Georgia). Although your dad and I so often tried to find the words to express just how very proud you always made us feel, we probably never quite found the right words to let you know how truly proud we were. 
Later on you took coursework in nursing at both Barry College and Ohio State University. I guess you could feel the tug on your heartstrings even then as you left college early, so eager to embark on your chosen career of being a caregiver, a career that we were not surprised that you, with your great big heart for others, had chosen. And you chose well for, no matter where you worked during your lifetime, your talents were noted by management and you were consistently singled out as a leader. 

Mel, you always truly loved those in your care and tried to show your love to them in so many ways. Unfortunately, although time will not permit me to share all of your acts of loving kindness, I would, however, like to share one that I thought was especially meaningful.  This story involves a little seven-year-old boy in your care who had been diagnosed with full- blown aids. Even after escaping an attempted bite by the little boy, you went to Toys R Us and bought the little tyke some stuffed animals, coloring books and things that you thought would make him happy. This is only one example of the loving kindness that you shared with those in your charge. You cared deeply for the plight of those who were ill in the gay community. You did not judge them but, rather, loved them unconditionally. You showed your love for them in so many ways. 

My dearest Melanie, I will forever miss your beautiful smile and contagious laughter. I will miss the many girl-to-girl and mother- to- daughter talks we had on a daily basis. I will miss the fun times we had in the Florida Keys, one of your favorite vacation spots. I will forever miss all of those sun-filled beach days that we shared here in Ft. Lauderdale. Most of all, my beautiful daughter, I will miss your kind and loving heart. The only comfort I now have is in knowing that you are in God's eternal care along with your dad, your nana (grandma) and your pappap (your special name for grandpa). I will treasure each and every precious moment that you were given to me and forever be thankful for God blessing my life with a daughter like you. The thought of you, my beautiful Melanie, will forever dwell in my heart. My baby girl, I love you.

Oh Mel- I was so happy to see you again the first week of this month as you and your mom came to see my mom in hospice. Losing someone is never easy especially at such a young age. I am really sorry for your loss.
