Kareem St. Calver Alston, affectionately known as “Reemy”, was the third of three children born to Randolph St. Calver Alston and Ingrid Alston on May 29, 1994. He was educated at Sunshine Elementary, Lakeside Elementary, Walter C. Young Middle School, Charles Flanagan High School and Florida International University (FIU) where he earned a Bachelor’s of Arts in Psychology on May 20, 2017. Kareem was employed by Florida International University from July 2017 to September 8, 2017 as an Enrollment Generalist. His immediate aspiration was to obtain his graduate degree with the aim of achieving his long-held goal of pursuing a juris doctor degree and establishing a career as an attorney.
At a very young age, Kareem’s love for his Heavenly Father was evident. His first spoken words were “Abba Abba,” a phrase that he would chant repeatedly. Abba derives from the Aramaic word that is best translated as “Daddy.” In Scripture, the word Abba also signifies the close relationship between us and our Heavenly Father. Kareem’s love for Jesus continued throughout his life. At age seven, he asked Jesus to become his best friend and followed through with the commitment of baptism. Kareem often found solace in the church, and would often serve as a volunteer there.
Kareem was a gentle spirit with a big heart and a great sense of humor. He loved to laugh, and he loved to make others laugh as well. He had a rare gift of finding humor in almost any situation. One of his favorite retorts (saying) during times of dispute was: “Jesus is watching.” Even though Kareem was jovial by nature, he was equally sensible and responsible. He was smart, astute, articulate, self-motivated, and hard-working. He especially loved a good intellectual challenge, and was exceptionally kind and loyal. Kareem was a techie enthusiast and relished learning and sharing his technological findings. He unquestionably found great joy in helping his family and friends however he could.
Kareem is survived by his parents, Randolph and Ingrid Alston; his sisters: Dr. Khadine Alston and Kristine Alston; Grandmother: Merle Baro; Aunts: Marjorie Dobson, Deane Watson, Joan Watson, LaRona, Lorna Carey, Janice Johnson, Barbara; Uncles: Rev. J. Abraham Johnson, Corey Johnson, Andrew Dobson, Alvin Alston; Cousins: Neisha Dobson, Shoshana Dobson, Andrew Dobson Jr., Craig Miller, Andre Alston, Karen Hamelton, Natasha Brown, Taj, Tanaj, June Hall, Jarue Johnson, Janelle Johnson; Godmother: Hyacinth Wallace; and a host of many other relatives and loved ones.
