John P. McGuinness, Sr. (“Jack”) 1942-2018 of Lauderdale by the Sea, FL, and formerly of Longmeadow, MA and North Providence, RI, died at Holy Cross Hospital in Ft. Lauderdale on February 17, 2018 with his wife Barbara and his nephew Max Erbe at his side. Born in Pawtucket, RI, he was the son of the late Arthur J. McGuinness and Helen Dugan McGuinness. He was a graduate of Tolman High School in Pawtucket, RI and later earned his bachelor’s degree from Post University in Waterbury, CT. John started working at age 19 for Blackstone Valley Electric in Pawtucket; REMVEC in Westborough, MA; and Northeast Utilities, NEPEX, and ISO New England in Holyoke, MA for over 40 years. John was in the U.S. Army Reserve from 1961-1968. On May 25, 1962, he married Barbara Bruzzi of Pawtucket, RI at St. Joseph’s Church in Pawtucket. John and Barbara lived in Pawtucket; Seekonk, MA; Sutton, MA; and Longmeadow, MA where they lived for more than 30 years. They were married for 55 years and raised five children; Deidra M. Ciolko (Joseph DeHart) of the Dominican Republic; John P. McGuinness, Jr. who passed away on September 7, 2010; Kiara M. Erbe (Aaron Erbe) of Florence, AL; Trinna B. McGuinness (Chris Ibarra) of Pompano Beach, FL; and Anthony A. A. McGuinness (Kateri Egan) of Charlestown, MA. John was blessed with 13 grandchildren: Joseph Ciolko; John III (“Jack”), Nicholas, and Vincent McGuinness; Miles, Max, Augustine, Cecelia, and Georgia Erbe; Natalia and Liam McGuinness; and Molly and Megan McGuinness. John was predeceased by his brothers Arthur, Edward, and James McGuinness; his sisters Mary Remington and Eileen Rowland; his son John, Jr.; and his son-in-law Mark Ciolko. John dedicated much of his life to volunteering. He spent many years as a scout master and assistant scoutmaster in Boy Scouts both in Longmeadow, MA and Sutton, MA, he coached youth sports, he was a CCD teacher at St. Mary’s in Longmeadow for many years teaching the confirmation class and was given the Pope Pius X medal for his dedication, and for the past ten years he volunteered at Holy Cross Hospital in Ft. Lauderdale as a eucharistic minster in the spiritual care department. He was known for his humor, crosswords, golfing skills, and love of poetry and reading. John is survived by his wife Barbara, their children and grandchildren, and many nieces, nephews, extended family, and friends.
Services will be at St. Pius X, 2511 N. Ocean Blvd (A1A) Ft. Laud on February 24, 2018 at 10:30 a.m. In lieu of flowers donations should be made to Juvenile Diabetes Research Fund (www.jdrf.com).
