John Hamilton Howard

John Hamilton Howard, beloved father, grandfather, and friend, passed on Monday, June 10, 2024, and is now resting in peace with his family and dogs that have gone before him. John was born in Cincinnati, Ohio, on September 12, 1936, and he graduated from Woodward High School where he was captain of the swim team. He swam at Kenyon College his first two years of college, and then transferred to Ohio State, where he graduated from the College of Veterinary Medicine. In 1963, he married Carol Fischer. For several years, he practiced large animal veterinary medicine in Ohio and Kentucky before they moved to Florida. They first moved to Winter Haven where John not only began practicing small animal veterinary medicine but also took care of marine animals. The next move took them to Fort Lauderdale, Florida, where he spent over 30 years at Plantation Animal Hospital before moving to Sanibel Island upon retirement.

John loved spending time with his family and his many dogs, especially his rescue Sadie. He enjoyed working in the yard and antique shopping. He and Carol shared a passion for Ohio State football; traveling to the North Carolina mountains in the fall; visiting their family at Ryland Heights, Kentucky; and making memories with their trips to Europe and Israel. John had a deep faith in Christ, and he passed that onto his children through his lifelong example of putting others first.

John was preceded in death by his mother Ruth Long and his father Robert E. Howard.

John is survived by his wife Carol Fischer Howard, and his two children and their families:

Daughter Laurie Hembree, husband Mike, and their daughters Jessica and Angela

Daughter Amy McGill, husband Greg, and their son Liam and daughter Katie.

He is also survived by his brothers Bob and Bill.

John's funeral service will commence on Wednesday, June 26, 2024 at 11:00 at the KRAEER - FAIRCHILD FUNERAL HOME, 4061 North Federal Highway, Fort Lauderdale.
