Con Thi Mac was born in Hue, Vietnam on May 7, 1911. She was the third of four children in her family. Her childhood was spent tending to her family’s rice husking farm business. She never received a formal education as her days were occupied with hard manual labor. She taught herself how to read and write and learned how to cook to help take care of the family.
Con Thi Mac was married at the age of 16 and bore two beautiful children, Bich-Du and Loc. When they were still young, her husband, Tu Tran, who was a scholar and highly ranked government official, was kidnapped by communist soldiers and never returned. Her strength and resolve were tested but she was determined to work harder, so that her children could have the education she did not. It was no easy task to single handedly raise two successful children and her grandchildren, especially during the long twenty-year war raging in Vietnam at the time. She persevered and was a loving and nurturing matriarch of her family.
At the age of 64, with the continued threat and perils of the War, and impending fall to communism, Con Thi Mac was compelled to leave her home country and flee to the United States. Far from any thought of retiring, her golden years were spent continuing to raise her grandchildren, as her own children were building a life in their newly adopted country.
Even with all she had to endure and the sacrifices she made, Con Thi Mac was always courageous, resilient, and determined. She had a joyful and spirited demeanor and made lasting impressions to all who met her. She was the keystone to any success her children and her grandchildren achieved! To her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren, she will always be remembered as a fun, loving and nurturing soul.
