Mom faced her illnesses over the past five years with such courage, strength, and determination. She truly was an inspiration to all of us.
Mom was born to Peter and Dora Perchuk on June 17, 1934 in East Braintree, Man., where she was raised on the family farm.
At a very young age, she saw our Dad, Jim Cox, at the local general store owned by her sister. He had dropped a coin and she scooped it up, ran away with it, put the coin on a chain that she wore, and told all her friends that she was going to marry him . . . and when she grew up, she did just that.
So began a beautiful love story in which we, their children, were the focus. Mom and Dad’s lives revolved around all of us. Mom kept the coin to her last day.
Mom and Dad had five children who they raised since 1961 at their home on Frog Creek: Bob Cox (Brenda), Thorrot Cox (Kathy), Ann Cox, Marian Hyatt (Mark), and Martha Cox (Martin).
They also had 11 grandchildren, John Cox (Meghan), Allison Cox (Wayne), Katrina Oski (Seth), Blayne Cox, Jamel Cox, Michelle Mondor (Ron), Roy Tighe, Lee Hyatt, Virgil Hyatt (Mei), Melanie Hyatt (Dave), and Dmitiri Martsch; and eight great-grandchildren, Destiny Cox, Kendall Cox, Colin Cox, Scott Cox, Jada Wilson-Hyatt, Sydney Mondor, Arthur Cox, and Annabelle Cox.
Mom was the youngest of a large family. Her siblings were George Perchuk, Alex Perchuk, Bill Perchuk, Peter Perchuk, Betty Sutton, Anna Perchuk, Lena Kumhyr, Katie Kumhyr, Marie Rawn, and Georgina Jefferey.
She was predeceased by her husband, Jim Cox, their newborn child, Catherine, as well as their great-grandson, Colin; her parents, Peter and Dora Perchuk; her infant sister, Vacilka; and siblings, George, Alex, Anna, Lena, Marie, Peter, and Katie.
Mom was a devoted wife and mother who loved her family so much that it was hard for her to say goodbye. She loved cooking and gardening, and was the most extraordinary baker, especially her blueberry pies.
It is a complete understatement to say that Mom and Dad loved to pick blueberries. We will think of them fondly each blueberry season.
There wasn’t anything that Mom couldn’t do or learn to do. She was an amazing woman who lived her life practically, generously, and with great passion. She will be forever loved and missed.
As per Mom’s wishes, there will be no funeral.
If friends so desire, in memoriam donations may be made to the La Verenedrye Hospital Cancer Clinic c/o the Riverside Foundation for Health Care.
