Scott Stephen Weinberg, FASLA, passed away on Saturday morning, May 13, 2023, in his home in Hoschton, Georgia. Scott was born in Middle Village, New York on December 25, 1950, to Etta and Sam Weinberg.
Scott met his wife, Jan Hass, at Iowa State University in the Spring of 1970, and the two were married in New York City in August 1971.
He received his Bachelor of Science degree in Landscape Architecture from Iowa State University shortly thereafter in 1972.
In May 1972, Scott began his career as a practicing landscape architect at Suburbia Gardens in St. Louis, Missouri. He stayed with the firm until 1979 when he returned to Iowa State University to pursue his Master’s degree. While in that program, he taught Construction, Planting Design, and Professional Practice courses at the university. He received his Master of Landscape Architecture degree from Iowa State University in 1981.
In 1982, after the birth of their daughter, Leah, in September 1981, Scott and Jan left Iowa for Athens, Georgia, where Scott accepted a teaching position with the College – Environment and Design at the University of Georgia. He would stay there his entire career.
In his 30 years at the University of Georgia, Scott (Professor Weinberg to so many) had an incredibly decorated career that included authoring one book; coediting two books; Technical Editor for Landscape Architect & Specifier News for 20 years; three CED teaching awards; Chair of UGA’s University Council, Faculty Admissions Committee, and Curriculum Committee; UGA Teaching Academy Member and UGA Senior Teaching Fellow; and Georgia Chapter ASLA President.
In addition, the highlights of his career are undoubtedly:
his 20 years as an Athens-Clarke County planning commissioner;
serving as the Technology Manager of the Athens venues during the 1996 Olympics;
being a Presidential appointee to the UGA Athletic Association Board;
working as the Associate Dean of UGA’s College – Environment and Design from 2003 to 2006, Interim Dean from 2006 to 2008, and Associate Dean again from 2008 to his retirement in 2012;
spending summers teaching with the UGA Studies Abroad program in Cortona, Italy and all of the lifelong friendships he made in the tiny hilltop town; and
all of his students that he taught, advised, mentored, befriended, and stayed in touch with through the years.
Most recently, Scott received a commendation from the Governor of Georgia, Brian Kemp, for his years of service to the State.
Scott was predeceased by his parents, Etta and Sam Weinberg, and his brothers, Larry and Richie Weinberg. He is survived by his wife, Jan, and his daughter, Leah Weinberg (Marc Brown and their two cats).
A child at heart until the day he died, Scott loved magic, animals, Disney World, and most of all Christmas (also his birthday).
Jan and Leah want to say thank you to all of the amazing nurses and caregivers at the Northeast Georgia Hospital System hospice program for the care they gave to Scott in the last month. They also wish to thank all of their friends and family for their kind messages and support. Scott was a light in the lives of so many and will be missed by everyone who knew him.
A graveside service for Scott will be held Thursday, May 18, 2023 from 2:00 PM to 3:00 PM at New Montefiore Cemetery, 1180 Wellwood Avenue, West Babylon, NY 11704. Colorful attire requested.
