The only daughter of Lena “Leah Bracha”) and Louis “Yehudah Leib” Fabrikant, Rose was one of four children. Louis was a Chazan and Lena, a bas Levi. Mom’s brothers were Max, Irving and Al. Rose lost her husband, Hyman David Silverberg 50 years ago when her youngest son, Steven was 14 and his older brother, Fred was 21, so she had to shoulder the burden of raising them herself. Her daughters, Barbara and Judy were still fresh in their marriages.
Mom was a strong, wise, loving, giving, selfless woman of tremendous integrity. She was college educated at a time when it was considered a rarity for women to do so. She was musically talented, played piano by ear, sang opera professionally, learned classical music, cantorial Jewish music and brought all four of us into the world of music.
Mom was a savvy business woman with many other attributes. She was a full-charge bookkeeper, an active PTA parent, a brilliant writer and a homemaker who worked full time. Mom was voted “Woman of the Year” several years in a row at Prospect Park Yeshiva. As a young girl, she sang the Star Spangled Banner and the Hatikvah at an event honoring Eleanor Roosevelt.
Mom’s legacy includes her four children, ten grandchildren and sixteen great grandchildren.
Her stories, philosophies, advice, selfless love and devotion will last all of us a lifetime. Mom will be sorely missed, but never forgotten.
