I have been searching for words to share about Brad.  This site is aptly titled memories because Brad is someone I will never forget.  I thought about something to resonate with Herb and Heidi who lived for their son setting a standard I hope to live up to with my own children, or instead a heartfelt note for Katerina for who I am so incredibly grateful as I watched firsthand how genuinely blissful she made Brad.  For all of us that cared for Brad you should take solace in the fact he and Kat had a love that all of us search for. Notwithstanding all of these are worthy sentiments  I would like to leave a note for Mia of what her father was like so she can share in our memories as her own. Mia, your father was one of the closest people in my life for nearly the last 20 years.  He was the first person I met at law school, a groomsman in my wedding, and as my brother Shaun said an honorary “Zetlin brother”.   Most importantly, he was incredibly empathic and caring for all those around him.  I wish I could do that statement justice as it sounds like a cliché often spoken about people.  It pains me that I cannot find the words nor ability to properly express how sincerely the depths of your father’s kindness and selflessness went.  He was the person you could call in the middle of the night with an emergency and expect him at your doorstep  with a well thought out plan, the person who felt your pain when you were down and the one person that was truly happy for you when you succeeded because he rooted for you like a fan more than a friend.  He made the world such a better place and continues to do as many of us in remembrance of him will undoubtedly try to emulate his values and morals and put out into the world the altruistic and benevolent energy he so effortlessly did.  Lastly, I hope you won’t have to read this often to remember these things because I plan to be busy telling you in person every chance I get for years to come.

I first met Bradley in 2006 through Heidi and Herb when I was the Commanding Officer of the 112 Precinct in Forrest Hills. Heidi was the 112 Precinct Community Council President and introduced me to her son. As soon as I met him, I knew that he was a special person. He was kind, selfless and always seemed to have a smile on his face. Several years later, I was involved in an arrest where an officer suffered a broken leg during a fight with several people that went to trial. I was lucky to have Bradley as the Assistant District Attorney assigned to the case. At this time, I realized that not only was Bradley an exceptional human being, but he was also an outstanding attorney. He was incredibly thorough in his preparation. He handled himself in the courtroom with a confidence and efficiency that I did not expect from such a young man. 

I believe that he was an outstanding attorney for the same reason which made him a beautiful person. Which was that he genuinely and deeply cared about all people. In his personal life, he always did his best to make everyone around him happier, and in his professional life he did his best to make NYC a safer place.

I enjoyed seeing you both on the Zoom last night, despite the terrible circumstances. Please accept my most sincere condolences at this dark time. I was not in good touch with Brad after college, but he was a great friend at Duke and will live on in so many of my happy memories. 

I remember coming to visit Brad in New York during a winter break. You both were so lovely to host me, and I remember that my jacket which was adequate for Atlanta winter was not at all suitable for New York in December, so you offered to lend me a warmer coat. One memory from that trip that stands out to me: Brad was such a proud New Yorker and he wanted me to try a particular bagel that he told me was the "best!" We took the subway from Forest Hills to the Met and looked for the much-anticipated bagel cart on the sidewalk, which we had talked about extensively on the train, and it wasn't there! Ravenous by that point, and needing breakfast before I could enjoy art, I wasn't too happy, but that was typical Brad - he really wanted to share an experience that he loved in the city that he loved, so I couldn't stay mad. (I can't remember the rest of the details, but I'm sure we found the second-best bagel somewhere else in short order, and went on to enjoy the day.)

Brad was a person who would do anything for the people in his life. He had a heart of gold - he was so generous and genuine in his concern for others. My heart goes out to both of you and to Katerina and Mia. Although I never observed him as a father, I have no doubt that he excelled in that role. I know that a part of him will live on in his daughter, as well as in all of our memories, which we will carry with us forever.

This particular memory is silly on some level, but it warms my heart: 

In 3rd or 4th grade Brad and I had a spell when we were teasing each other a lot (in a mean way.) One day (Gale?) sat us down and explained that neither of us was a mean kid and that we should be nice to each other. We both said "sorry" to each other during that meeting, but it felt a little forced because we had both been coerced.

The next day Brad brought me two eggo waffles wrapped in tin foil and a small pack of M&Ms. He told me that he really was sorry and that we should get back to being friends. 

What a true apology. 

After that we got along great and trash talked in a friendly way as only Jets/Mets and Giants/Yankees fans can.

Bradley was a good man with a kind soul. We were both in the Class of 1998 at St. Ann’s, and I have fond memories of our marine biology class trip to Jamaica in our sophomore year. He became a surrogate big brother for me during that trip, and was very protective of me. I’ve never forgotten that.

My sincere condolences to you all. Bradley will be sorely missed, and my heart goes out to all of you.

I am at a loss for words. Brad and I met at BLS and interned together at QDA. From the moment we met, he was the kindest, gentlest soul - always willing to lend a hand, always there with a joke if you were having a rough day, always a team player, ever the gentleman. We lost touch after BLS, but I moved to Forest Hills a few years ago, and every time we ran into each other, it was like no time had passed - Brad was just as he had always been, just as sweet and kind, just as childlike and funny. It isn’t fair that the world has suffered such a loss. You were the very best, Brad, and your infectious smile will be missed. 

I am so sad to hear of this tragedy. I knew Bradley at Saint Ann's. He was so wonderful and memorable a child that he has popped into my head just recently in a way that made me smile, which has happened many times over the years.  He was the sort of student that faculty enjoyed so much.  My condolences.

This past week I lost one of my closest friends – someone who has been a fixture in my life for the past 18 years. 

Someone who never missed any monumental life event, to texting practically on a daily basis…

Bradley Harrison Chain was so much to me and everything to so many others. He was incredibly kind, generous, compassionate, loving, and so altruistic.

His altruism was incomparable. You have never met a person that cared more for others. He was the friend that always made sure everyone had everything they needed before even thinking of himself. 

He was a devoted husband, adoring father, and loving son. His heart might have failed him at such a young age, however, no heart was bigger. He cared so deeply for his family and friends. Everyone loved Brad and everyone wanted to be in his company for the obvious reasons. 

More than all of the attributes of a saint – Brad was a fantastic dancer with awesome rhythm, had sensational wit, and cheered passionately for the Mets and Jets. 

Life is so unfair. I am enraged and in tears for his family’s loss and everyone else who doesn’t have the opportunity to be with him one more time or for the first time. 

It’s incredibly difficult to imagine life without him and not having him as one of my “horsemen” in my crew here in NYC.  He once called me his “hero.” It was one of the greatest compliments I ever received from anyone since I respect his morals and values so deeply. 

I love you, Brad. I am heartbroken. I will continue to honor you by seeing the world through your eyes…

It is beyond belief that you are gone Brad. You visited my courtroom so many times that I will always see you sitting there perhaps with a slightly amused expression on your face.  Rest in peace knowing that you made the world a better place.

Herb and Heidi, I am just so so sorry. Brad was a really good friend. I mean that both in the sense that he was my good friend, and that as a friend, he was really good. He's the one who remembered to call, who would go out of his way to meet up. With me being in Colorado, we hadn't seen each other as much in the last bunch of years - just when I would be back in NY visiting and we could make it work with kids and all. He came to Colorado to visit for New Years 2013. We stayed in the mountains, I taught him to ski (kinda), and we went to dive bars. He jokingly went on and on about the ridiculousness of ski gear generally, and how he got the jacket that was lined with little silver dots ("the dots, Adam! The dots! It's got the dots!") that were supposed to somehow reflect warmth back. 

A few weeks back I got a jacket from the internet and, unbeknownst to me until it arrived, it was the same kind as Brad had gotten - it had the dots! As soon as I opened the package and saw the dots, it made me start laughing and I went and told Kathleen the story all over again about Brad and the dots, and how it was too bad that I hadn't seen him in so long, and how when the world gets back to normal we need to go to NY to see him and others we love there. 

If Brad were here, I know the terrible joke he would make: "you want a silver lining? It's the dots! It's got dots!" Maybe that's what I can take away. If I know the silly jokes he would make, then a part of him is still with me. Brad was a good person who left a strong mark on my world. I'm going to miss him. My heart and thoughts are with you.

To the Chain Family, please accept my most heartfelt condolences for your loss. I am a defense attorney. Brad and I were “adversaries”, but you would never know it from the way he conducted himself. He was tough, intelligent but fair and reasonable. A pleasure to work against. Just a few weeks back we spoke on a case and he was overly willing to help with an issue that arose. It was taken care of the next day.

Nothing compares to your loss. You should however know, Brad will also be a tremendous loss not just to the QDA but to the entire criminal bar of Queens County.  He was a pleasure to work against and even more of a pleasure to know. RIP Bradley.

I met Brad on my first day at BLS and we were inseparable for the next 3 years.  He would do anything for his friends and family- without question or hesitation.  I remember calling him late one night because there was a roach in my apartment and he got on a train from Queens to Brooklyn to come kill it for me.  By the time he got there I had lost track of it and he spent hours scouring my apartment for it.  We never did find the roach and he insisted that I had conjured it in my mind and we laughed all night.  He never let me live it down and would bring it up from time to time even 15 years later and we would laugh again.  He was always there for a good laugh and was the best shoulder to cry on.  Over the years, even after I moved to FL, Brad has always been there for me- a call or text at any time of night or day and he would answer with good advice and and a listening ear and a joke to ease the pain.  When I came to visit he would drop everything to meet up even just for a tea party with my kids.  He even met me at the airport during a layover  once just so we could spend a few hours together and catch up.  He was selfless, caring, and kind and the best friend I could ever have.  Brad was the best.  The best friend, the best confident, the best person I have ever met.  He is deeply loved by so many and will be sorely missed.  My heart goes out to his family- your loss is unimaginable.

I still can't believe I am sitting down to write this! Brad and I met in law school- his pleasant disposition easily drew people in as we navigated BLS together. Then again we worked together at QDA. Often times Brad spent much of the day helping others with their work that he had to stay late to finish his own. He never complained  and was always the first to volunteer his time. When we both got to KGII, Brad proved that not only was he an outstanding attorney but he knew how to throw a mean party as well. So many lunches filled with laughter and late nights made easier because he was there.  To his parents- thank you for raising this kind, caring and amazingly intelligent gentleman, and sharing him with all of us. We were blessed to be in his presence! To his wife his and daughter Mia, there are  no words I can offer that could suffice but know this - I am sure Brad will be watching over you from Heaven and protecting you.  I pray that your hearts are so full of his love that it envelopes you and helps you both to overcome his loss. Until we meet again buddy...

Brad exemplified the best of us.  His character and reputation were beyond reproach.  His work ethic, dedication to justice and crime victims, and the constant support and mentorship he showed his colleagues were standards  we should all be lucky to achieve one day.  But even more impressive than the major cases and investigations he supervised, or the number of ADAs who got their jobs because Brad interviewed them, and even more impressive than how he made literally everyone who came in contact with him a better person, was Brad the husband, and Brad the father.  Brad loved his wife and daughter more than anything.  Everything Brad did was for his girls.  I pray that they eventually find comfort and peace knowing how many people loved and cared about their father and husband.  You truly were the best of us Chain.

Brad was a colleague and dear friend. I first met him when I was assigned as his office mate when I started in Supreme Court. He was always willing to answer any and all of my questions. He kept a Coscto-sized jar of jelly beans on his desk for all to partake and it was like the water cooler spot where people loved to gather. The last time I spoke to him was after the snowstorm in December when he came into the office and offered to help Intake with anything we needed because he knew many people were having trouble getting in due to the heavy snow accumulation. That was the kind of person he was. He also made an amazing sangria. Brad will be greatly missed and he will not be forgotten. My deepest condolences to you and your family.

Brad was the kindest, nicest person I have ever met.  He was there to assist anyone and cared so much about our work.  He was not happy doing some of my cases and I will never forget our last conversation - just last Thursday.  He was cleaning his office - for our eventual move - and found 2 of the cases he worked on.   He hated those cases - because he was so sensitive to what the victims suffered.  He cared so much and it hurt him to see people suffer. 
 I will miss his smile, his presence, his pleasure of telling us Mia's new achievement.  So many things.  My heart goes out to Kat and Mia, Brad's parents and his grandma.  May his memory live on forever. 

I am a defense attorney who had several cases with Brad over the years. I can tell you from experience, he was an excellent advocate and a genuine professional; in addition to being a fine attorney, he was a straight shooter and fair minded. Even though we were adversaries, he was always a pleasure to deal with. No matter how busy he may have been, Brad found the time to listen to or share a story with me and I don't recall ever seeing him without a broad smile on his face. You should know that he was both respected and well liked. I am shocked and terribly saddened by the news of his passing. Please know he will be missed and you truly have my deepest condolences.  

I remember it like it was yesterday, Brad and I were sitting outside of Helene's office on our first day at QDA. I was so nervous but Brad already knew the ropes as an intern and showed me the way those first few days. We were instant friends. I was lucky to work alongside Brad in Crimtake and joined him in Supreme Court a year or so later.  As so many others have said, Brad stood out among an already exceptional group of people.  He was always willing to help others and he was a friend to all.  Brad was smart, witty and funny and was a great host for our family feud lunches.  He never had a bad day - he was always up for a chat, a laugh or to grab a beer.   Brad, you will always be my QDA family.   Our Spring '06 class reunions will never be the same without you. Rest in peace, friend.

Rest Peacefully Brad. My very first encounter with Brad was when he interviewed me when I was applying for a position at the QDA's office.  Brad interviewed me during my second round interview and we have crossed paths on countless occassions while working extra weekend intake shifts. It was a privilege and an honor to work with Brad over the years.  In the bureau, he was my rock, my "go-to guy,"  my problem solver;  reliable, and ethical, and so so smart.   He loved being a public servant, and I admired him greatly for that.  
 Brad's heart was huge, and he possessed a tremendous capacity for empathy. He noticed when I looked sad, and encouraged me not to work too late. 
His love for his family was plain for all the world to see. 
He made me smile, he made me think, he loved our work with his heart and soul, and I loved working with him. 
He enriched my life, and the lives of so many of us in his QDA family.  His life, though far too short, was well-lived.  We should all aspire to such a life.

I’ve been reading all of these beautiful tributes to Brad-and the common theme among each one is that he was the kindest person. I couldn’t agree more. Brad and I shared an office wall for 5 years. Every morning I was greeted by his warm smile.  And every day I went rummaging through his candy drawer to find the right chocolate bar and would often eat it with my feet on his desk and just chat. He was so easy to banter with. He was the best colleague and most genuine friend. I’m heartbroken over this news and send my deepest condolences to his family. He will be so missed. 

I had the honor of working with Brad for three years in the QDA Rackets bureau.  He was kind and always there for a colleague in need.  Brad pushed me to be a better attorney and was a supportive presence in the office.  I am grateful to have known and worked with him and am deeply sad and shocked by his passing.  My prayers are with his family and daughter, and I wish all of them strength during this difficult time and joy in his memory.

Like so many, I am devastated by Brad's passing.  My sincerest condolences to Brad's family. Brad started six months before me and like so many of my class, I went to him for help because he was so open and friendly. I just spoke with him last Tuesday and we laughed about the state of the world. In fact, I talked to Brad quite a bit during the pandemic as he came in to work, even during the scariest times, to help out his colleagues with whatever they needed when it was unsafe or impossible for them to come in. I cannot believe he is gone. It is profoundly unfair. I hope one day his daughter will know how much her Dad meant to so many people, and how sad we are all are to lose such a good person.

It seems like only  yesterday when Heidi was planning Bradley’s Bat mitzvah. The sweet young man that would visit our office while he was a student at St. Ann’s.
It’s heartwarming to know that he grew up to be an exceptional son, husband, father, friend.
May his memory be a blessing.

Brad, as most ADAs do, began in the Intake Bureau, where I had the privilege of meeting him. He always had a smile on his face and a willingness to take on anything that was thrown at him. From the very beginning Brad helped his fellow fledglings and was happy to do so. Watching his career grow was awesome and he never lost that love of  helping others. 
I was always grateful to see his name on the extra shift sign up sheet - knowing that his experience would make the day better. 
To his wife, daughter and family - I can’t even begin to imagine the sense of loss. You are in my prayers. Rest In Peace Brad.

I worked with Brad in the Appeals and Rackets Bureaus at the Queens District Attorney's Office.  Brad was always kind, funny, selfless, generous, helpful . . . just a complete class act and gentleman.  He was loved by all and will be missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing him and working with him.  I offer my heartfelt condolences during this time of unimaginable grief and loss.           

My deepest condolences to the Chain family for this terrible loss.  Brad and I started in the DA's Office six months apart 15 years ago.  Brad was the sort of ADA that just became part of the fabric of the office; one of the faces you thought about when you thought about QDA.  He worked in almost every division and was a constant at every office event, sanctioned and unsanctioned, and was the kind of guy you could go to for anything.  He was the kind of person that keeps an Office like QDA, and a bureau like Major Economic Crimes, together.  To say his loss will be felt deeply and for a long time to come understates just how important Brad was to the QDA family.  Rest in Peace my friend.

Brad’s genuine good nature was apparent and it was a pleasure to be in his presence. The impressions he’s made over the years on so many will never be diminished. May his family find a way, in time, to peace and understanding. 

I’ve worked with Brad at the Queens DA’s office for the past 15 years. I was so sorry to hear about his sudden passing.  He was so young and I know that his loss will be greatly felt by all who knew and loved him.  I will remember him fondly with that brilliant smile he always had on his face. I wish I could attend the graveside service but I am currently under quarantine due to a Covid exposure. Please accept my deepest condolences. 

Brad was such an incredible friend.  I have known him since he started as an intern.  He was a regular at my monthly poker games. He was always willing to help and sacrifice for others.  I will never forget him helping me move out when I left my ex.  He has always been there for me.  His loss will never be replaced.  The world is a much sadder place without him in it.  I wish for you all peace.  Know that we are here for you and willing to help with anything.

I am totally heart broken by the loss of Brad.  He was one of the kindest individuals I ever had the pleasure of meeting and his dedication to his family and career was immeasurable.  Brad would be the first to show up to assist the QDA Intake Bureau during every snow storm, blackout and superstorm even though he was assigned to another bureau.  He did this right up to our last snowstorm.  I've read all the other memories posted evidencing what we all know about Brad and hopefully these words can be a small comfort in your time of sorrow.  My deepest sympathy to the entire Chain family.   

Bradley and I interned together at the queens da office and then went different paths when he stayed on as a prosecutor and I became a defense attorney- I will never forget his friendly smile and general magnetic personality. I’m very sorry to hear of his passing.

I've had the pleasure of knowing Brad for over ten years working as his paralegal.  Whenever I had an issue with something at work, he was my go-to person because he never made me feel like a pest.  He would do anything for anyone and not expect anything in return.  I think everyone would agree that he was one of the kindest and most genuine people around.  I'm going to miss my chats with him in the office along with his hilarious impersonations of some of the people in our office - and let's not forget his endless candy stash that he kept in one of his office drawers.  Rest easy Brad!  You certainly will be missed by many!

My heart goes out to Brad's family, he was an amazing friend and co-worker and one of the most generous guys I know.  He went above and beyond helping others, with no questions asked!  Brad went out of his way to do anything for anybody, he even helped coach my son's little league team when they needed volunteers.   He was one of a kind and will be missed by everyone who knew him.  Brad was a mensch through and through and the words being shared about him now is a testament to his spirit and work ethic. He was a great attorney and an awesome colleague. My heartfelt condolences. 

I have always considered the QDA as family. Brad and his friendship with both Jeanine and I are a perfect example of the bonds that were established back in the early 2000's to now. From softball rivalries to happy hours at Austin's, to discussions about how to investigate certain cases, to fostering my son's obsession with the Duke Blue Devils, to helping him build his own monster truck out of cardboard boxes so he could compete and win his Halloween parade, to sharing your favorite Charlie Brown books or movies with Ava and Vivian, to helping to edit countless briefs and memos for a fellow colleague (jeanine), to one of our final moments together, where you took time to write a speech and present a plaque to Jeanine at our house to commemorate her time in the office. You exemplified what a true friend is and could be. You gave without expecting return and did so with a passion not only to your family, friends, but to the QDA were you gave your everything to the office and residents of Queens County. As a current member of the NYPD I want to thank you for your service to the city, your were a relentless prosecutor who brought brilliance and passion to your casework and to the courtroom. I know so many officers from the city who had the privilege of working cases with you and praised your belief in Justice and Integrity. You helped to foster the bond between the officers on the street and the Queens District Attorney's Office.    We will make sure your memory lives on in our daily relationships and especially to your daughter who was truly blessed to call you dad. Rest easy Brad, we've got this from here. Fidelis Ad Mortem.

Brad Chain was one of the first people (outside my class) I met at the DA’s Office. And, he went out of his way to welcome me. As he did everyone. And that is how I will remember him. Words cannot express how heartbreaking this loss is to you - the  Chain family, his friends, and their world. I can only think that G-d wanted him for himself - I cannot wrap my head around  any other explanation. When you hear all that others have to say about him though, you wonder if that is why he was taken away from this world way too soon. I adored and respected him more than he will ever know. A complete mensch, he was brilliant, kind, the voice of reason, and a real mentor to classes of young ADAs.  May they take his light, and all they learned from him into the world so that his spirit will never leave this one. I worked with him in my last two bureaus at QDA and remembered when he joined us at QDA. I will always remember him as  a proud father to his beautiful little girl, a family man, and an amazing friend to those he held in his inner circle. My heart breaks for all of you. I am sending you hugs and my deepest condolences from across the Atlantic - I live in Israel now and will say a prayer for him here. May Brad's name and memory be only for a blessing always. 💔💔

Thoughts and prayers to Heidi and the Chain Family.  Brad and I were summer interns together for QDA in 2003.  When I started working full time a few years later, I was then introduced to his mom, Heidi, while she was the 112 Precinct Council President and then reunited with Brad once again when he became an ADA.  Will miss the friendly exchanges in the AM and PM when signing out for the day.  We'll miss you, Brad.

I am so sorry for your loss. Brad was a kind person and a dedicated public servant.  I can’t begin to imagine your personal pain but know that the larger community is grieving with you.  Your family is in my thoughts and prayers. 


Growing up with Bradley for most of my life, he was one of the few people that still calls me Mikey. There are so many memories of laughing together, playing basketball and spending time together. I don't think I ever remember him in a bad mood. As we got older, I served in a grand jury so afterwards I always enjoyed hearing his stories being an ADA. I know he was so proud of his work, his family and his life. If only he got his driver's license. Commuting from Queens to Brooklyn to hang out with us must have been tiring but Brad always was happy being there and we appreciated that. He's definitely one of those people in my life who no matter how long we lost touch, when we got back together, it felt like you were with family. Going to miss you Brad. We had a lot more laughs to come.
